The Latest - By Chinae Alexander - Body Confidence

This month, I had the special opportunity to talk to Women’s Health about body confidence. Here’s what I had to say:

I get asked a lot about how I stay body-positive. For me, it’s not about being “positive” all the time. That’s not real and just perpetuates the idea that you need to feel a certain way about how you look. I think the key is to be truthful and share where I’m at with my body in the moment.

There’s a big difference between positivity and confidence, and I always aim for the latter. Confidence means you can feel when you’re having negative thoughts about yourself and acknowledge—comfortably—that they might be true.

Like, I wish my butt were bigger. I do! But I still love myself. I still have confidence. If I could wave a magic wand and get the booty of my dreams, sure, that would be awesome. But I recognize that a bigger butt wouldn’t bring me instant happiness. It’s just a silly body thing, and when you can get to a point where the silly body things don’t boil your brain, that’s the healthiest place to be.

You can still find things to critique in yourself—that’s okay. I had a major weight-loss journey where it was a goal to change my body. But even when I was bigger, I didn’t hate my body. I was still super-confident, even though I had goals and a desire to get healthier.

I’ve gained about 10 pounds of sanity weight since being at my smallest, and I’m in this really healthy, comfortable, easy-to-maintain place where I can focus on growing in strength, advancing in my career, and doing all these other things without having so much of my headspace be about how I look.

I know people are afraid to say when they’re struggling on Instagram, especially with body issues. They think they’ll let people down if they’re not positive 100 percent of the time, or if they admit they wish something was different. But I think what people really want is honesty, and to be able to relate and say, “I’ve felt that way, too.” So I say it when I’m having an off-day. And I don’t hide goals for my body.

I think that’s true confidence.

I hope you’ll take a look at the article.

Culture - 5 Models on What It's Taking to Shake Up the Industry
There’s no denying it: the modeling industry needs some work when it comes to diversity and acceptance. But the women profiled in this Man Repeller article give me hope. Disabled, curvy, over-60, brown, gender-fluid—they’re bringing all these types of bodies to the forefront and it’s refreshing as hell.

Candice Huffine has been a renowned, game-changing model in the fashion industry for almost two decades. She has been featured in publications such as Vogue, W, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and ELLE. An avid runner, Candice completed the Boston and New York City Marathons in 2017. With an everlasting personal mission to empower women to embrace their authentic selves and love the skin they are in, Candice has combined her two passions of fashion and sport and stepped into the role of designer with the creation of her brand DAY/WON.

YOU'RE A BODY POSITIVE ICON, YOU MUST SPEND SO MUCH TIME TALKING ABOUT THE PARTS OF YOUR BODY THAT YOU ACCEPT... BUT WHAT MENTALLY HAS BEEN AN OBSTACLE YOU'VE HAD TO NAVIGATE IN YOUR CAREER?

Just constantly explaining and proving I belong here has been a challenge for decades. When I signed my contract as a model 18 years ago there was little room or “need” for curvy models, but I saw a bigger picture. I knew just being ME was going to be impactful, but proving my body is wonderful and worthy on a regular basis can get daunting tbh. We are all unique and beautiful and good and this should no longer be an obstacle for anyone!

TELL US ABOUT NAVIGATING THE MODELING INDUSTRY WHILE BALANCING YOUR FAMILY AND COMPANY.

I navigate the modeling industry with ease. It’s those others you listed that need the special attention. My family is on this journey with me and I remind myself daily that all I have is all I ever wished and worked for. Balancing it all isn’t easy, but it works because this is my dream.

YOU LOOK GORGEOUS AND CONFIDENT WHETHER YOU'RE ROCKING WORKOUT GEAR, A DRESS, OR LINGERIE. WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL YOUR BEST?

Being true to myself is the secret weapon, truly. If I go off course for a second and try something that doesn’t feel authentic to me in order to “be sexier” or do something for likes everyone would see right through it because it’s not natural for me to not be me!
Being true to myself is the secret weapon, truly.

WHAT WAS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AS YOUR BUILT YOUR COMPANY, DAY/WON?

Size inclusivity! I have been a champion for diversity and acceptance in this fashion for nearly 2 decades and when I finally got my chance to do what I had always looked for in other brands- to serve ALLLLLL women- it was a no brainer. I am so proud that the Day/Won collection is in its entirety, now and forever, for every BODY.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT AND WHY?

I’m a runner at heart! I spent two years straight training for races so it will always be my go to! It’s my meditation, so to speak. It clears my head, calms me, motivates me and makes me feel powerful! Plus it’s so easy to do on the road, which lately I always am. (As she writes from airport ;) )

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST PINCH ME MOMENT OF THE LAST YEAR?

Completing the NYC marathon- my second of the year! I still marvel at all I accomplished last year. Racing in Boston and NYC changed my life and taught me to never doubt myself, my body, my ability and my strength again.

DO YOU EVER GET TIRED OF HAVING TO TALK ABOUT BODY POSITIVITY?

If it helps another woman feel more proud of the skin she is living in and allows herself to love herself and live unapologetically... then I’ll talk about til I’m 102!!!

RAPID FIRE ROUND...

Your last meal: Pizza

Best advice you ever got: "Your only competition is with yourself"

Holy Grail beauty product: Boy Brow by Glossier

Boss babe you admire: Lizzo! (And you Chinae duh!!!)

Guilty pleasure or weird obsession: Watching reality tv and eating cereal on flights :)

Project or product you want to plug: I always want to draw attention to my brand Day/Won which I am so damn proud of! I love sharing that not only are we the only fully size inclusive activewear line on the market but also sustainably made from recycled material in the USA. There is just so much about this endeavor that makes me feel good, and seeing other women share the excitement of finding performance gear that finally fits them right is the greatest thrill of all!
