Michael Blecker Abstains from Signing Commission on Care Report

The Commission on Care's final report has reignited the debate on veterans' right to choose healthcare outside of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Our Executive Director, Michael Blecker, was one of 15 members appointed to the Commission and one of three commissioners who chose not to sign the final report. He agreed with 17 of the 18 outlined recommendations, but chose to abstain from signing the final report and issued a letter of dissent, stating that making 'choice' a core element of the plan would "threaten the viability of VA care for millions of veterans who rely on it."

Renewing Our Focus in a Post -"Five-Year Plan" Era

The deadline for Obama’s five-year plan to end veteran homelessness had passed six months ago, and while some communities had reached the goal of functional zero, most had not.
The focus of this year’s National Coalition of Homeless Veterans conference focused on what communities need to do moving forward to end veteran homelessness.

Swords Announces Veteran Employment Collaborative Grantees


We are pleased to announce that the Walmart Foundation recently awarded Swords to Plowshares a $1.6 million for a dual-state grant to enhance and increase innovative employment and training programs in California and Texas. The grant will target areas in both states with the highest concentration of underserved veterans.

The purpose of our yearly Summit is to bring together organizations that serve veterans, with the goal of enhancing access to mental health services, particularly suicide prevention services, for veterans and their family members residing in the San Francisco Bay Area.
