Canada has set an aggressive target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030. A quarter of Canada’s energy consumption is used to power our homes. This generates almost 20% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions in addition to other direct and indirect emissions from commuting, food, travel, recreation, and the goods and services we buy.

Achieving our national goal is going to be a huge challenge, but we can all do our part to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change and Canadian Geographic wants to help out.

We’re looking for diverse, passionate families and households to participate in a new Canadian Geographic carbon reduction competition—Live Net Zero—launching this Fall. Selected families will compete for a chance to win an electric vehicle AND be given $10,000 to use in a series of challenges running from September 6 to November 14, designed to help significantly lower their household’s carbon footprint while inspiring fellow Canadians to join the journey to net-zero.

The families will be documenting their efforts and using social media to help others learn what changes they can make to reduce their energy consumption, shrink their carbon footprint, and lower their spending on energy.
