Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Black, Indigenous and People of Color

This 8-week class is designed to introduce mindfulness meditation as a way of developing greater balance, ease, and fuller participation in your life. This session is specifically offered for those who identify as people of color/multiracial/racial minority and who are willing to engage in the practice of mindfulness.

High-tech small businesses: Apply for 19th round of SBIR Advance funding

The Center for Technology Commercialization is offering a matching grant of up to $100,000 to provide additional assistance to companies in the process of completing a project in the federal Small Business Innovation Research or Small Business Technology Transfer programs. This is the 19th round of SBIR Advance funding dedicated by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation since SBIR Advance began in 2014.

Investors from outside Wisconsin are finding worthy deals here

For years, Wisconsin could be described as a “flyover state” when it came to venture capital funds that historically clustered on America’s coasts. Why invest elsewhere if you could find all the talent and technology you needed in young companies a few blocks away?

It appears some of those investors have put Wisconsin on their flight plans … at least for a “fly-by.”

Ninety different venture capital funds from outside Wisconsin took part in 42 separate early stage deals in Wisconsin in 2021, easily a record for that class of investor interest outside the state’s borders.

UW–Madison works to protect Wisconsin poultry from avian flu

Keith Poulsen, director of the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, with a team of diagnostic scientists led by Ailam Lim, had been closely tracking the ongoing spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza as migrating wild birds were spreading it across the country this winter and spring.

So, his team was prepared when they recently identified Wisconsin’s first known case of the virus, from a commercial chicken producer in Jefferson County.

However, during the pandemic, veterinarians noticed a sharp increase in demands for care services and strained to find ways to maximize the efficiency of their staff and referral management systems.

Report: Madison’s tech employment numbers grew by 6.2% amid pandemic

Madison gained more technology sector jobs in the first year of the pandemic than in the prior half decade, according to a new report by a Washington, D.C., think tank. While tech employment numbers grew by 3.6% between 2015 and 2019, that number jumped an additional 2.6% in the next year alone, the report by the Brookings Institution found. Madison had over 15,000 tech workers in 2015; in 2020, that number was just under 19,000.

A science trailblazer retires: Stem cell researcher James Thomson’s legacy changed the future of biology

James Thomson helped the scientific world turn its attention to the shape-shifting stem cells that give rise to all of the building blocks of complex living organisms, from skin and bone, to hearts and blood, to neurons and brains. After more than 30 years with the University of Wisconsin–Madison and 15 years with the Morgridge Institute for Research, Thomson has announced plans to retire in July 2022.
