Programming will range from keynotes and breakouts focused on creating a tech town and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Meet the 5 startups selected for gBETA Madison’s summer cohort

Five early-stage companies with connections to the University of Wisconsin-Madison participated in the summer cohort of gBETA Madison, a free accelerator program run by Wisconsin-based gener8tor, according to an announcement earlier this month. The startups ranged from a yogurt chip company to a virtual reality education firm.

Nano RED wins 2021 Pressure Chamber Contest

August 19

A startup called Nano RED has won the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce’s Pressure Chamber contest, which gives early-stage companies a chance to pitch to a live audience. Nano RED is developing precision medicine platforms for the treatment of respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, as well as drug delivery for cancer immunotherapy. The company beat out four other finalists, two of which also operate in the health care space.

How Madison and Milwaukee rank on list of best Midwest cities for startups

Madison and Milwaukee are both among the top 20 best Midwest cities for startups, according to an annual list of 59 cities from Chicago’s M25, a venture firm that focuses on early-stage technology companies based in the Midwest.

Exelixis and Invenra Expand Collaboration to Discover and Develop Novel Biologics in Oncology

The augmented partnership builds on the two companies’ ongoing collaboration and license agreement to discover and develop mono-specific and multi-specific antibodies for incorporation into novel biologics to treat cancer, which was originally announced in May 2018 and expanded in October 2019.

UW–Madison moves up in worldwide ranking of universities

August 16

The University of Wisconsin–Madison has risen to 31st in the world and 21st in the United States in the Academic Ranking of World Universities. UW–Madison is the second-highest ranked Big Ten school, behind only the University of Michigan. Last year, UW–Madison was ranked 32nd in the world, 23rd in the U.S. and third among Big Ten universities.

FluGen flu vaccine research ramps up as work on COVID-19 candidate slows

Research on an experimental flu vaccine by Madison-based FluGen continues to expand, with a low dose showing some protection against a mismatched strain, a higher dose producing better immune responses and three new studies targeting older adults and children, groups among those most at risk from flu.

Campus sustainability initiatives have their day in the sun

UW–Madison has a long tradition of conservation and stewardship, one that continues today across all aspects of campus, from instruction and research to campus planning and transportation. On August 12, leaders from the Wisconsin Departments of Administration (DOA), Safety & Professional Services (DSPS), and Financial Institutions (DFI) toured several campus facilities to learn more about the ways UW strives to create solutions that address some of today’s biggest sustainability challenges.
