Steve Carpenter, one of the world’s foremost lake ecologists and professor emerit at the University of Wisconsin­–Madison, has been awarded the Blue Planet Prize.

The Blue Planet Prize has been awarded annually by the Asahi Glass Foundation since 1992 to two individuals or organizations in recognition of outstanding achievements in and application of scientific research that have helped provide solutions to global environmental problems.

Erin Silva named endowed chair in organic agriculture and outreach

Erin Silva, associate professor and extension specialist in the UW–Madison Department of Plant Pathology, has been selected as the first recipient of the Clif Bar Endowed Chair in Organic Agriculture and Outreach. 

Silva’s selection as chair recognizes her leading-edge work in organic agriculture. Her research and outreach efforts focus on improving organic and sustainable cropping systems, with a special emphasis on organic no-till production and cover crops.

State matching grants fund 6 innovative Dane County small businesses

In the latest round of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Advance program funding, 11 small businesses in Wisconsin will receive up to $900,000 to commercialize their innovations, according to a statement from SBIR Advance. The state matching grant program assists companies in the process of completing a project in the federal SBIR or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

Latest round of Research Forward supports cross-campus collaborations and diversity

Sixteen projects have been selected for funding in the second round of Research Forward, a program to stimulate innovative and groundbreaking research at UW–Madison that is collaborative, multidisciplinary and potentially transformative.

The winning projects were chosen from 96 proposals submitted by applicants across campus. They range from establishing a Microbial Natural Products Discovery Hub, to probing the origins of the universe, to examining the negative effects of poverty on adolescent academic success, to developing a new type of anti-tumor vaccine that can be used to treat cancer.

Aldevron and Inscripta ink manufacturing deal for CRISPR Type-V nuclease

A plan to broaden access to CRISPR has attracted a chunk of funding and is now seeing its wings spread.

Fargo-based DNA and mRNA producer, and URP tenant Aldevron has signed an agreement with life sciences company Inscripta to manufacture and commercialize the Eureca-V Nuclease, a wild-type MAD7 CRISPR Type-V nuclease.

Company with tech to rapidly clean water in sewer backups wins 2022 Biz Plan Contest

A Milwaukee-based firm with a system to help stop untreated sewage from being dumped into waterways during floods is the grand prize winner of the 19th annual Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest.

Rapid Radicals Technology, which can treat water at a municipal scale where there is a spill point confluence of storm and sanitary sewers, was also the winner of the contest’s Advanced Manufacturing category.
