Innovation One completed at University Research Park

University Research Park (URP) recently partnered with Valerio Dewalt Train (VDT) to produce a master plan meant to enliven and densify the office park’s existing facilities. A master plan was created with the intention of carving a new road from a bordering main artery street and adding below-grade parking to leave the ground level open for public space and amenities accessible by foot.

Chancellors advocate for R&D investment, Endless Frontier Act

The chancellors of Wisconsin’s top two research universities are pushing for investment in more R&D.

“The only way that we stay at the front end of the world economy is by being on the front end in innovation,” UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank said, adding that other countries in key tech areas are ahead or even lapping the U.S. “That may not show up today; in another decade or two it’s going to show up really strongly as to where the new startups are, where the growing businesses are.”

Ashley Cortes Hernandez hopes to spread STEM enthusiasm among Latinx youth

Ashley Cortes Hernandez is excited to bring Latinx representation to the team in hopes of making STEM more accessible to underrepresented communities, especially the Latinx youth.

“I wanted to pursue outreach after graduate school because I wanted to be part of a community that brought STEM to a broader audience and made it accessible to everyone,” Cortes Hernandez says. “I really just took the plunge and I am so lucky to be part of such an amazing team that gets to do just that every day.”

Biohealth’s chance to attract talent to Wisconsin, podcast with Lisa Johnson

Few, if any, sectors in Wisconsin have been more at the center of the COVID-19 fight than the biohealth industry.

Lisa Johnson, chief executive officer of BioForward Wisconsin, said the sector includes life sciences, medical devices, digital health and health systems. BioForward is a membership organization that represents more than 200 companies in the sector in Wisconsin.

On the latest BizTimes MKE Podcast, Johnson discussed some of the industry’s lessons learned from the COVID-19 fight, but also highlighted its opportunity to attract new talent to Wisconsin. She said the state is uniquely positioned because its biohealth sector is not overly concentrated in any one area.
