Key findings:
-
There are almost 700 voluntary sector infrastructure bodies in the UK, spending over £500m each year
-
519 of these are local or regionally based
-
There has been a significant decline in the number of infrastructure organisations in the last 12 years, despite an overall growth in the voluntary sector organisations they support and enable
-
There is a fragile ecosystem in funding for these organisations, with a relatively small number of grantmakers supporting this work
-
Specialist organisations supporting marginalised groups are most reliant on grant funding from lottery distributors and trusts and foundations
This research paints a picture of the voluntary sector infrastructure funding landscape, and importantly, highlights the challenges around funding for these organisations over time.
It is our intention that the report provides context to grantmakers to inform strategy development and encourage wider funder collaboration. Infrastructure organisations are sometimes an invisible part of the sector, but we all feel the impact when organisations close, either directly or indirectly.
