Tranquility in the City


Think of a city that offers space for nature, respite and calm. A city where you can wander, breathe cleaner air and listen to the sounds of people and wildlife together. This is the 'tranquil city'. This is the City of London.

The Tranquil City project is exploring what tranquility means for us in the City, by creating a crowdsourced map of 'calm' areas, called the 'Tranquil Pavement London'. Help grow the map yourself, by posting a photo of your tranquil space on Instagram using the hashtag #tranquilcitylondon and the location.

Tranquil City project will be running free tranquility explorations and walking tours in the City throughout February and March 2018, to help City workers and visitors find space for calm in their daily lives. Contact to be notified of the events and to get involved. Find out more at

Addressing prostate cancer

The Barbican Library (Barbican Centre, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS) is hosting two free events, led by Prostate Cancer UK, to raise awareness of prostate cancer among City workers and residents. Both events aim to discuss the risks, symptoms and treatments available and will be held on:

Monday 22nd January, 11:30am - 2:30pm (free drop-in session)
Wednesday 14th February, 12:30pm - 1:30pm (talk)

Free "Gym and Swim" for City workers

This month, City workers are invited to try out the fantastic facilities at Golden Lane Sport & Fitness free-of-charge, by attending a taster "Gym and Swim" session. The free taster is open to all working in the City and is available for general and lane swim sessions only. Opening hours are 6am - 10pm Monday - Friday, with reduced hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Fit for Work downsizes

The Government's Fit for Work service has dropped its referral and assessment offerings, however its free online (website, webchat and resources) and telephone services are still available to employers seeking general advice about health and work. Access Fit for Work here.

Health and wellbeing providers

The City of London Corporation's CityWell team is hosting two internal health and wellbeing days for staff (14th and 21st March). If you provide health and wellbeing services in the Square Mile and are interested in contributing to these events, please contact the CityWell team here.

The Business Healthy Challenge is returning for May 2018. This month-long physical activity challenge is a great way to encourage staff to be more active, earning points and winning prizes while competing against colleagues and participants from other City businesses.

Westminster City Council is hosting a free business breakfast seminar, in partnership with Turning Point, looking at alcohol and the workplace. The event will cover:
  • the importance and benefits of alcohol awareness in the workplace
  • practical advice on changing behaviours and reducing risks associated with consuming alcohol
  • the responsibilities and recommendations for employers on alcohol strategy
  • how the London Healthy Workplace Charter can help your business
