Hi folks,

A love story...

Some people have said to me that Pulse is really a love story – about falling in love with Scotland, her culture and traditions. It is – although that sounds a bit rose tinted and heritagy, but I do love this place in all its gnarly warm-heartedness.

With that in my mind, I’m looking forward to kicking off this Scottish tour of Pulse (co-devised and directed by Kath Burlinson), driving around, seeing the different landscapes, getting a feel for the pulse of each area, meeting people in different communities, hearing their stories and sharing mine.

The Pulse programme will have a good bit of information about what's going on in Scotland if you want to get involved: step dancing classes, courses, festivals and more about the amazing new initiative, the People's Parish... thank you to TRACS for donating money for a nice programme!

The tour starts in Luing on 10th March, thanks to Norrie Bissell and Brigid, who are organising it and were integral in getting the gorgeous Atlantic Island Centre up and running.

Then it’s across the country to Eden Court in Inverness on 16th March. My mum was brought up in Kincraig. That's where her mother, Marjorie Anderson, got the job as the primary teacher after returning to Scotland, a new widow, from her missionary life in China. 1940. My mum died of cancer in 1999 and whenever I travel up the A9, I stop off at Kincraig and visit her at their graves. Then, at Dunkeld, I might pop in and visit Hamish and Finn Moore if they're up there making pipes. Looking forward  to seeing some pals en route and meeting new ones.

Please pass on the word to friends in other places -  they might catch the show where they live. Tickets are on sale now, in case you needed a nudge… Dates, venues and booking links below.

As the character of Margaret Bennett says in the show: “Fall in love with Scotland, Mairi. You can take your time…” Will you join me?

The Limerick trip

I had such a gorgeous time in Limerick at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance recently. I spent a few days there with Concerto Caledonia on the invite of Mats Melin, showcasing Scottish music and performing Pulse. There are some incredible people at the academy, making some very interesting art and looking for ways to express their stories and collaborate. Thank you for such a fantastic welcome!

Interplay Workshop in Edi

Hey! all you arts leaders, artists, change makers, musicians, health workers, creatives, I highly recommend this workshop. Interplay has given me some great tools to support my teaching and facilitation. I like the incremental frameworks - strong, safe and fun frameworks that make the ordinary extra-ordinary!

I’ll be leading the workshop alongside European Interplay leaders Meg MacLeod, Sophia van Ruth, Annegret Zander and Bernhard Staudt. Hope you can make it along - you choose how much you can afford to pay – between £90 and £140 – for the weekend.

When: April 7 – 9th 2017
Where: Queen Margaret University, Musselburgh, EH21 6UU

The People's Parish

I think we’re witnessing the start of something really interesting with the People’s Parish, which my husband David Francis and the team at TRACS have been working on for the last few months.

Here's a bit more from Dave about it all:

The People’s Parish aims to enable people to shape and share the story of their own community, to find meaning in it by combining local stories, traditions and cultural memory with local creative voices.

The inspiration for the initiative came from the Statistical Account of Scotland, which began over two hundred years ago at the close of the eighteenth century, when Ministers of every parish in Scotland were asked to write a detailed account of the state of their parish.

In the modern version we feel the story should be told not by a few professionals or central institutions, but by the people who live and work in each of Scotland’s 871 ancient civil parishes.

The aim of the People’s Parish is, in short, to produce 871 pieces of community-generated artwork in any medium and any genre.

The result will not only be a local resource, but also a multi-faceted and evolving mosaic of humanity and nature in Scotland as a whole, in the first third of the new century.

if you have an interest in community and local culture you might be interested in participating in the initiative's launch day on March 25th at the Scottish Storytelling Centre – details here. Or for more information visit tracscotland.org/peoples-parish
