2017: A Year in Review
ABAN Logo

Thank You for Your Ongoing Support and a Super 2017!
Dear <<First Name>>,

2017 has been another progressive year for Africa-focused early stage investors and the African entrepreneurial ecosystem at large. We have witnessed large follow up investments in Andela, Mkopa Solar, Flutterwave, Twiga foods and many others. We have welcomed the launch of new initiatives such as XL Africa by The World Bank; and we are attracting ongoing interest from global tech giants, illustrated by new programs launched by Facebook, Google, Orange, IBM and others.

Governments are also becoming increasingly smart in engaging with investors; the 'Lagos Innovate' initiative; the Egyptian Government backing funds managed by Flat6Labs and Innoventures; and the South African Government partnering with GEN to fast-track startups are just a few examples.

2017||has been a very dynamic year for Angel Investors across the continent. We have seen the creation of Angel groups increase, as have their investments in early stage ventures across the continent.

In 2018 we expect these activities to continue to increase as the world looks to Africa for growth, and as Africans developing Africa respond with commercial opportunities in agriculture, power, health, culture, education and technology.
As ABAN we have celebrated the launch of a multitude of new Angel Investor networks and groups from Alexandria, to Abidjan, to Lusaka, to Gabarone and many more locations. We have expanded our series of Masterclasses and Bootcamps and proudly look back at having given a voice to Africa's early stage investor community at events in Canada, USA, across Europe and increasingly throughout Asia.
One thing that's for sure, is that we couldn't have achieved any of this without your ongoing interest and support, for which we are eternally grateful.
In this, our final newsletter for the year, we celebrate you - our biggest supporters - by taking a look back at some of our favourite moments and most exciting journeys of 2017.

Whilst 2017 has been incredible fun, we have also made some important progressions across the continent, not only to empower local stakeholders in the early-stage investment market, but also to promote the 'African Opportunity' far and wide.
With 2017 now coming to a end, we begin to unroll our plans for 2018, where we look to continue to support Africa's early-stage investment communities.
Until then, everyone here at the ABAN office wishes you happy holidays and all the best for the festive season. We look forward to connecting with you again in 2018.

Festive wishes,

David van Dijk
Director General
