Project Spotlight: Enduring Net

Enduring Net, a Manchester-based charity that uses technology for humanitarian good, won an Innovate UK grant in June to help protect the UK’s care homes from COVID-19. In a technical collaboration led by Blackpool’s Ken Foster and Enduring Net’s technical advisor, Zeljko Milinovic, Enduring Net is using that grant to create a digital passport solution for care home’s staff, residents and visitors based on self-sovereign identity (SSI) and biometrics. The goal of the digital passport is to confirm an individual’s identity and COVID-19 test status, potentially creating a safer environment for the UK’s 11,000 care homes. The encrypted passport would be stored securely on smart devices or biometric-locked wallets that can be unlocked only using finger vein pattern scanner technology. This allows staff members to interact with the system using only a scan of their finger as an alternative to a smartphone app.

Enduring Net’s digital passport is a CCI participating project, and various  demo’s are currently in construction and will be available very soon to demonstrate how the app works.

The solution is accessible by either using a QR code, a smart device, biometrics, or vein ID, so even non-tech users can use this solution. If you are interested in learning more about this project, please contact info@digitalpassport-id.com.

Use Case Implementation

At our August 18th meeting, Bart Cant of Rethink Ledgers presented the “COVID-19 State Surveillance System”, a VC implementation focused on state health authorities in the U.S. The system helps people plan appointments for testing and more importantly, allows them to receive test results as verifiable credentials. The implementation uses an SSI wallet provided by Trinsic. The business logic uses Digital Asset Modelling Language (DAML), a smart-contracting language that enables one to “build full-stack, distributed applications for DLT, blockchain or databases in days”. A key benefit of DAML is that it can use any underlying database or distributed ledger while modelling at the business layer. For more information about the project, please contact bart@rtledgers.com.

Our next meeting is scheduled for September 1st, 16:00-17:00 CEST. The meeting includes two more demos. Please visit our meeting page to see the full schedule.

Rules & Governance

The CCI GF Task Force has been working on editing inputs received towards the v2.0 of the Governance Framework. The first milestone was to produce a ready for review (within CCI and ToIP) version we are terming as "Beta," which was achieved on schedule by August 16.

The content of the governance framework, with expanded content from the original V1, will now include specific recommendations around data control and governance. We are also looking forward to including three example use cases as aids for readers who are considering adoption and implementation of the CCI GF V2.

In our future meetings, we intend to have guest speakers who are working on SSI centric technology interventions addressing the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. They will be leading the conversation around specific aspects of the governance framework including roles, processes factors related to their specific use cases and businesses. The task force will also start to discuss the topic of CCI GF governance authorities.

Communications, Coordination & Inclusion

We have officially launched CCI’s Twitter account and tweeted for the first time (follow us and retweet!). As we ramp up CCI’s external communication efforts, we are working to formalize the process of collecting and sharing of participating project information for marketing and promotional purposes. A Consent and Authorization Form for Use of Multimedia Materials was drafted and is under review.

We are going to host the next CCI all-hands call on August 28 at 8 am PT / 11 am ET / 4 pm UK / 11 pm HK. If you have not received a calendar invite, please reach out to Lucy at lucy.yang1030@outlook.com.

We are invited to present CCI’s work at the Decentralized Identity Foundation’s APAC call on August 27.
