Upcoming Events: Connecting with You in Person
The Regional District of Nanaimo's Team Watersmart is organizing two incredible Water Day events this spring. The Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region is excited to be a part of the organizing committee, and to be helping our region celebrate and learn more about our most valuable resource--water! You can find us at both events, at a display booth and as a speaker on April the 3rd. Click here for more information.
Join The Nature Trust of BC to kick off the Brant Wildlife Festival with a buffet dinner, live music, silent auction, and youth nature photo display at the Beach Club Resort. Tickets are $40 per person. The 2016 Brant Wildlife Festival will feature wildlife and nature-based events in the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region between March 19th and April 17th. Research Updates from MABRRI
Seeking Naturalists, Biologists, and Birders for BioBlitz on April 17th!
MABRRI is looking for people to help lead community groups on an exciting search for bird and plant species on Sunday, April 17th in the Parksville/Qualicum Area.

A BioBlitz engages citizens of all ages to see and learn about species they may never have encountered before. BioBlitzes also help to collect data that contribute to our understanding of the biodiversity of our region. The results, accumulated over the long term, assist with the development of monitoring and restoration plans, and with the conservation of endangered species. It’s the perfect mix of science, education, outdoor recreation, and community building.

MABRRI's BioBlitz is supported by Vancouver Island University and The Nature Trust of British Columbia. The event is run by a team of faculty, students and staff affiliated with MABRRI. The BioBlitz will be the final event of the 2016 Brant Wildlife Festival

Invitation to Join a MABRRI Technical Advisory Committee
The Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI) at Vancouver Island University (VIU) coordinates research projects involving VIU students and faculty as well as the broader community. All of MABRRI's projects involve students, and the Institute's intention is to increase knowledge and curiosity about the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region. MABRRI is currently developing Technical Advisory Committees (TACs) for some of its projects. TACs will involve community knowledge holders and VIU faculty and will function as informal, arms-length advisory boards on certain projects.

Heading to Peru in March
MABR and MABRRI will be in Peru next month for the 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Lima.

"The objective of this Congress is to review implementation of the Madrid Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves 2008-2013, the Seville Strategy and the Statutory Framework of 1995. The Congress will assess lessons learned and new challenges faced by the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, and will develop and launch an Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves for 2016-2025. Read more...

Our team will present on the new weather station and snow pillow that have been installed on Mount Arrowsmith, and on how biosphere reserve education is being incorporated into post-secondary curricula at Vancouver Island University. We're looking forward to reporting back upon our return.

We're using Instagram as a way to meet two goals:
  1. Raise awareness of the region through stunning photography;
  2. Connect with younger generations.
Our posts will focus on the connection between people and nature and on the beauty of the region.
New Faces! We're Pleased to Introduce...
Olayinka (Ola) Fadayiro
Nelson Lovestrom
My name is Ola and I’m a VIU MBA student. I'm doing my internship with the MABR with a focus on marketing and development.

I grew up in Nigeria near the capital city of Lagos and moved to Nanaimo in 2014 to attend VIU. The first thing that struck me when I moved to Vancouver Island was its beauty and quietness—being surrounded by water, trees, islands, and people who are always willing to help. My love of the region propelled me to narrow my internship search to areas around Nanaimo, where I currently live.

I was excited when I got the interview with the MABR. At the time, I knew very little about the MABR, but I was motivated to understand what UNESCO biosphere reserves are all about. I said to myself, “this is a great opportunity that doesn’t come often.” I feel at home working here and I’m eager to be a part of many projects and to discover more of the land and waters in the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region.
Hi, my name is Nelson and I'm pursuing the Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information Systems Analysis at VIU. I'm completing the practicum component of the diploma with MABRRI.

I grew up in Zeballos, BC, a small village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. I graduated from VIU in the winter of 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, and I've since returned to do the Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information Systems Analysis.

My current project is working to delineate wetlands not only within the MABR but also within the Regional District of Nanaimo. The purpose of this project is to understand what is out there in terms of wetlands and wetland types as well as to inform Regional District policy and better understand the nature of the groundwater systems of the area. It's been great working with my colleagues at MABRRI and I look forward to continuing to apply my education in practical ways.
Thanks for reading! Our next newsletter comes out in April.
