Anticipating the new assisted suicide legislation – what will it mean and who will it impact?

WHAT: Our expert will give a brief background on the issues of assisted suicide and euthanasia and an assessment of the possible implications of the soon-to-be introduced legislation followed by your questions.
The federal government will likely release its much anticipated assisted suicide legislation in the coming days. Canadian Physicians for Life is providing an opportunity for members of the media to have their questions answered by Dr. Will Johnston, a Canadian physician and longtime spokesperson on end-of-life issues.
Dr. Johnston will speak for 5 minutes to provide background information, and will then take questions. Some issues that will be addressed:
- How will the change in law affect patient care?
- What is the importance of preserving the conscience rights of physicians who object to engaging in assisted suicide?
- What are the unforeseen consequences?
WHO: Dr. Will Johnston
Will Johnston practises full service family medicine and obstetrics. He is the Chair of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition of BC and President of Canadian Physicians for Life. After first working in emergency rooms, he started a family practice in Vancouver in 1985. This practice continues to provide the real life context to his conviction that killing people of any age or size will always be the wrong way to solve problems.
