Double recognition for Kossmann.dejong at European Museum of the Year Award

The jury of the European Museum of the Year Award praised two projects designed by Kossmann.dejong in San Sebastián last Saturday: Micropia - world’s first microbe museum, and the National Military Museum both have been awarded a special jury prize.

Micropia received the Kenneth Hudson Award, a prize for the most innovative and daring museum of Europe. According to the jury: “This unique and original museum presents, in an elegant and engaging exhibition, the world of microbial life. In order to show its living collections to the public, new techniques of shared and projected microscopy have been developed, and carefully designed didactic elements impart information in a witty and effective manner. Micropia challenges common perceptions of the role of museums in society.” Kossmann.dejong designed the exhibition in close collaboration with the German media design studio ART+COM.

A Special Commendation was given by the EMYA judging panel to the National Military Museum (NMM) in Soesterberg. The jury is impressed by the way the museum avoids a mere militaristic approach and proposes a more social view of military intervention appealing to the visitors’ intelligence and reflection. “In presenting and explaining the moral dilemmas inherent in its subject matter, the museum addresses current issues and concerns, and exceeds visitor expectations in every way”, as is stated in the jury report. Kossmann.dejong exhibition architects is part of the Heijmans PPP consortium, which, in addition to developer Heijmans, consists of Felix Claus Dick van Wageningen Architects, and H+N+S Landscape Architects. The new building, the entire museum layout, and the surrounding landscape have been designed as an integrated entity.
