Interested juniors are encouraged to book their accommodation at Bonny Hills Big 4 as soon as possible.

Juniors Invited to Join the All-Australian Invitational Development Team at the Australian Championships

Juniors from all over Australia are invited to join the All-Australian Invitational Development Team (AAIDT).
You may have nominated for selection in your state’s representative team for the Australian School Orienteering Championships which form part of the Australian Championships Carnival from Sat 24th Sept to Sun 2nd Oct 2022. Perhaps you are awaiting the outcome of this process, or perhaps you were unable to attend your state selection races, or felt you were not quite ready for the selection process but are keen to develop your orienteering.

Then this development team is for you!

  • The AAIDT is open to all Australian school students at least 12 years of age at 31 December 2022.
  • The AAIDT will be a composite team of students from various states and territories.
  • They will stay at the same place as the schools’ teams and do almost all the same activities.
  • They will compete in the same races too. Parents of these students are invited to play a role by coaching/managing the team for all or part of the carnival.

There are no restrictions on the composition of this team within the ASOC categories:

  • Junior Girls/Boys, 15 years and under participating at moderate level
  • Senior Girls/Boys, 16 years and over participating at hard level

There are no formal eligibility criteria but, as a guide, the ASOC organisers consider effective completion of 3 moderate courses (for juniors) or 3 hard courses (for seniors), in the lead up season to the carnival, would be appropriate for this development group.

The AAIDT will be provided with supervision and coaching support similar to other participating state teams. Once at the carnival the group can (but is not required to) travel together as a team and will be accommodated at Campaspe Downs with the State teams. As a development team, it is not essential that athletes remain with the team for the entirety of the carnival (Sat 24th Sept to Sun 2nd Oct), though support and supervision will be available for the entire period.

Costs will be consistent with those of the State schools’ teams. Costs for the 9 day camp, including all meals and accommodation (exclusive of transport) is predicted to be $900 for per athlete. Depending on your state association, athletes may be able to receive financial assistance from their state body.

If you have any questions, please contact the AAIDT Co-ordinator Helen O’Callaghan on
0478226601. Or your respective state contact for the AAIDT, the ACT contact is Toni Brown (, 0411 968 001).

Meanwhile, enjoy planning to be a part of the biggest orienteering camp on the Australian calendar! Warm regards,
Helen O’Callaghan (AAIDT Co-ordinator) & Susan Guinane (ASOC Organiser)

Blue Lightning Junior Coaching

Blue Lightning is the Development Squad for junior orienteers in the ACT. Any secondary school student may join Blue Lightning, younger orienteers from around age 10 and upwards are welcome to participate if they are transitioning to more difficult (moderate) courses.

Training is on Saturday mornings each week, just before the Metro Series events. Each session will start at 9:30am, which will allow enough time to complete the training, have a discussion and let you have a rest before the Metro Series event starts at 10:30. Meet at the event assembly area, and keep an eye out for coach Tara and other squad members. No need to RSVP, just come along and join in. Parents, friends and families welcome to join in too!
