Wisdom and Joy
One of the many impactful lessons I learned through Landmark Education Corporation workshops is to “maintain an empowering context.” Not Pollyanna. Empowering. When challenging situations arise, it takes effort to remain balanced and positive. It takes inner strength.
Two concepts synonymous with inner strength are wisdom and joy. Below are some quotes to give you a sense of what they are, as an uplifting reminder if you are already living them or to give you something to strive for if you are not there yet.
“Wisdom is the ability to make decisions and remain joyful even when our decisions lead to sorrow.” – Kabalah, A Process of Awakening
“One acts under the guidance of his higher nature to transform the pain of experience into the joy of understanding.” – Kabalah, A Process of Awakening
“Joy is full when there remains nothing to be desired.” – St. Thomas Aquinas
“Joy is a special wisdom.” – Community
Some questions these raise are:
- Can you remain joyful even in the face of failure and adversity? Remember, joy is not happiness. Happiness is a feeling. Joy is a state of being.
- Is your cup (heart) so full that there is nothing left to want or need for emotional satisfaction?
- Have you attained the depth of wisdom (mind) that provides an inner knowing that guides you into joy?
This does not mean we ought not wish or hope for things. There are always goals to meet and ideals to achieve. It is the need for them and the results they provide that is problematic. What and why we need cause one of two things: upset and loss of balance – or – greater strength and possibility. It all depends on where we are coming from.
For example, needing kindness for oneself causes upset when not obtained. Wisdom, on the other hand, stands for goodness and kindness for all, not just for oneself. Thus, one strives to be kind at all times, not just when it is convenient, which serves as a role model for others. AND… wisdom does not need the kindness, because with wisdom comes joy, which is the power to proceed in the face of unkindness. It is the awareness that ultimately goodness will prevail in the end, even if it takes time to get there.

“The Serenity, Power, and Freedom class really helped me get back to myself. In the past year, life had a way of dragging me down and prolonging my distress and upset in everyday life situations. The tools and the different way of thinking I learned really helped create an “Aha!” moment and helped me to realize the power and light within myself.
I feel much more at ease, calm, and centered then I ever did before. I love that I am now on the right path and look forward to sharing this awareness and joy with everyone that crosses my path. I am beyond thrilled that I have discovered this spiritual connection within myself.” – EE, Architect
