Safety is Everyone's Job

Safety is a top priority for all of us at the University. During the last few years, we have invested in lighting, crosswalks, and other physical improvements as well as programs and personnel to enhance the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the Grounds.

The Office of Safety and Emergency Preparedness recently partnered with colleagues in the University Police Department, Parking & Transportation, Environmental Health and Safety, Student Affairs, and others on the Grounds to create a Student Safety Guide that is packed with useful information. Hard copies of the booklet will be distributed to all new students in late August. The same information is included in the Parent Handbook given to parents of new students and posted online. Returning students and their parents will receive the link to the online Student Safety Guide via email at the beginning of the semester.

Take a look at the Student Safety Guide online and familiarize yourself with the many safety resources available to the University community. Additional information about preparedness for faculty and staff is available on the OSEP site here.

Mark your calendar to replenish your personal emergency supplies during the weekend of August 5-7 during the state-wide Sales Tax Holiday. See the OSEP site for more information.

Accolades

As mentioned in the May edition of EVP-COO Area News, UVA was selected to receive the APPA 2016 Sustainability Award in recognition of the University's achievements in integrating sustainable policies and "green" practices and embedding them within our institutional framework. The award was presented at the APPA national conference in Nashville this month. Congratulations to our colleagues in Facilities Management's Office for Sustainability on this important recognition.  Read more about the award in UVA Today and check out this article on the APPA site about UVA's Delta Force, identified by APPA as a Best Practice in Sustainability.

Employee Profile
Lee Baszczewski,
Director of Organizational Excellence

If you're ever looking for someone to offer helpful guidance on a project, look no further than Lee Baszczewski and her colleagues in Organizational Excellence. Always quick with a smile and words of encouragement, Lee is an excellent partner to staff and faculty across the Grounds. Earlier this month, she was appointed to a three-year term on the Board of Directors for NCCI, the Network for Change and Continuous Innovation, at the group's annual conference in Montreal. Lee graciously agreed to be profiled in this month's EVP-COO Area News and offered the following response to our questions.

"I came to Charlottesville from California five years ago to help take care of my aging parents.  Unfortunately, my two adult sons said to me at the time, “you can go to Virginia, Mom, but we aren’t going with you!”  Being very close to my sons and grandkids, this has been a hard transition in some ways. However, I now have the opportunity to enjoy time with my 93-year-old mother and my two sisters who are close by.

I am a graduate of the University, and fondly remember that time when there were very few women, plenty of peace marches, and Easters weekend was the highlight of spring. Therefore, it was a great joy for me to come back to the Grounds and work under Sarah Collie in Process Simplification. Within two years, we were creating the Office of Organizational Excellence, under Pat Hogan, where our focus is to lead, facilitate, and consult on excellence and quality improvement to support the University’s mission. Truly rewarding work for our small yet incredibly experienced team.

Away from work, my husband and I love the peacefulness of our deck overlooking Lake Monticello in the house that my dad built. I love to get out into nature and kayak, hike and birdwatch. The Blue Ridge Mountains have always held a special place in my heart and it is a delight to be able to see them every day."

Payroll Team to Join UVAFinance

Under the umbrella of Organizational Excellence, University Human Resources (UHR) and UVAFinance have begun parallel paths towards improving how we do work at the University. UHR, through Ufirst, is creating an aligned HR function across the entire organization, taking a customer-focused approach on making the employment experience at UVA an exceptional one. UVAFinance is seeking to become the valued and trusted financial partner that the University community turns to first.

While considering how best to meet these objectives, UHR and UVAFinance leadership decided to move the Academic Division’s payroll team to the UVAFinance organization, reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President and University Controller. The payroll function will remain engaged with UHR and all stakeholders. The current alignment of payroll and finance functions in the Medical Center and UPG makes this move an appropriate fit as we move forward with Ufirst.

The payroll team's transition to UVAFinance will take place in late summer/ early fall, coordinated with the anticipated completion of the current search for a new Assistant Vice President and Controller.

Spotlight on Excellence

Bravo! Well done! Excellent job! Have you heard these words lately? Who doesn't want to be complimented when they do an excellent job and really make a difference? Did you know there is also a way to formally recognize excellence at UVA?

The Spotlight on Excellence program is run out of the Office of Organizational Excellence and is open to everyone at UVA – all colleagues and students. Every 4-6 weeks, the program recognizes individuals and teams who contribute to a culture of excellence at UVA in the areas of process improvement, customer service, innovation, and collaborative partnerships.

Nominations may be made via online submission on the OE website. Recipients are honored in a number of ways: letter of appreciation copied to their manager, a framed certificate, a recognition gift, an article in the monthly OE newsletter and on the OE website, and an opportunity to showcase their work.
