The University of Virginia was designated a "HEARTSafe Campus" by the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation at its 23rd annual conference last month. UVA is now among a group of only 18 institutions that have received this honor. The award in part recognizes the University's successful installation of more than 200 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) across Grounds and the expansion of its CPR education program.

Administered by the Office of Safety and Emergency Preparedness (OSEP), the AED initiative at UVA is made possible by a regional partnership between OSEP, UVA Health System's Life Support Learning Center, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, and the Charlottesville Fire Department. For more information, see the OSEP site.

Employee Profile
UPD Officer Audrell Ragland and K-9 Muki

Many of us spend more time with our colleagues than we do at home during the course of an average work week. What if your partner at work came home with you at the end of the day? That's the routine for University Police Department Officer Audrell Ragland and her partner, K-9 Muki. They are specially trained and on call 24/7 to serve the University and surrounding area.

What brought you to UVA and how long have you worked here? I was previously in Juvenile Corrections for approximately eight years and decided that I needed a change. I've been working here at UVA a little over four years now. K-9 Muki is a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois born in Europe and has been working at UVA for almost six years.

What was your first job ever?  My very first job was a Telemarketing position with TruGreen Chem Lawn.

In no more than two sentences, tell us a little about what you do in your job.  I am part of the Explosives Detection K-9 team here at the University with my partner K-9 Muki. Our job consists of the same duties as a regular patrol officer but we are on call 24/7, to serve not only the University community but surrounding areas as well.

What is your favorite thing to do in the area?  When not at work I love spending time with my children and watching basketball. When K-9 Muki is not working, he enjoys playing fetch with his Kong and giving lots of hugs.

What is your favorite Charlottesville area restaurant? My favorite local restaurant is Thai 99. K-9 Muki's favorite food is Science Diet, Chicken & Barley Recipe.

What is something you have always wanted to learn how to do? I've always wanted to learn how to swim but could never get over my fear of the water. K-9 Muki has always wanted to learn how to get along with cats!

At the March 3 event, several contractors showcased safety initiatives and innovations ranging from Stretch and Flex sessions with workers to prevent injuries to using new technology to analyze job sites and potential hazards. UVA Gift Processing Services Center Opening April 1

Opening April 1, the UVA Gift Processing Services Center (GPS) will support the entire University community in the upcoming bicentennial campaign and beyond. The creation of this center of excellence was a cross-Grounds Organizational Excellence initiative that provided an opportunity for a complete review of gift processing at the University and centralized gift processing in the Alumni Association under the purview of the UVA Fund. UVA Fund staff worked closely with colleagues from the office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, UVAFinance team, University Advancement office, fundraising foundations, and UVA Fund clients to create a platform from which best-in-class gift administration can be provided.
Four key performance indicators have been defined for the new center: accuracy, productivity, timeliness, and customer service. The goal is to provide gift processing services that meet or exceed industry benchmarks in these areas based on open communication, standardization, and implementation of available technology and automation. For more information, contact or call 434-924-7018.
