New Compliance Website

The Office of Compliance recently launched a new website, furthering the University's effort to promote adherence to all laws, regulations, and policies. The website provides an institution-wide overview of our diverse compliance functions and houses a central repository of compliance contacts, reporting tools, and related policies. Assistant Vice President for Compliance Gary Nimax notes that working with ITS-CACS to develop the website made the process go as smoothly as possible. It was important to Gary that the compliance website comply with University's brand guidelines, standard website formats, and accessibility requirements. Check it out at http://compliance.virginia.edu

Student Financial Services

The start of the academic year is busy across the Grounds, particularly in offices that interact closely with students and their families. For two weeks each August, the philosophy in Student Financial Services (SFS) is "all hands on deck!" as each member of the team shares in the work of helping students arrange their payments and financial aid at the start of the fall term. The 10 busiest business days in SFS this year were August 15-26 when the team took 4,6838 phone calls, handled 1,867 email messages, and provided 1,064 walk-in counseling sessions. Kudos to the SFS team on their great work!

Employee Profile
Naomi Crawford, Student Financial Services

A long-time University employee, Naomi Crawford has seen a lot of change at UVA even while remaining in the same part of the institution for four decades. She works in the Student Accounts area of Student Financial Services and graciously agreed to be the focus of this month's Employee Profile. Thanks, Naomi, and thank you to Chris Doran for nominating her!

What brought you to UVA and how long have you worked here?  I have been here for 40 years, starting one year after my high school graduation. At that time, UVA was the best place to apply for a job with good benefits and a great work experience.

What was your first job ever?  This was my first job. I have only worked at UVA and have been through several changes of the office. First it was the Bursar’s Office, then the Treasurer's Office, then back to the Bursar's Office, and now Student Financial Services. I started in the Student Loans Department and am now in Student Accounts.

Tell us a little about what you do in your job.  I am the Supervisor of Military & Government Contracts and the Point of Contact for the Department of Defense. I receive contracts and official documents to award and invoice sponsorship for student’s tuition and fees being paid for by the military/government agencies. Also,  I am a part of the Student Accounts Team that works really well together in assisting students, parents, and other departments within the University.

What is your favorite thing to do in the area? I love to decorate for the holidays. Everyone seems to like it and I always check with new employees when hired to make sure I am considerate of their feelings. I like to see people happy and it seems to do that. I know this is a work place, but I feel that we all spend so much of our time here it helps employees to be more productive if the office atmosphere is little less formal, while being considerate of the image that we show the public. I like collectible toys. In my office, I have quite a few M & M candy dispensers. We have a contribution to keep M & M candy stocked for anyone who wants a little pick me up.

What is your favorite Charlottesville area restaurant?  I don’t really have a favorite. I like trying different things when new restaurants open.

What is something you have always wanted to learn how to do?  I'm not sure, but maybe how to swim. I always wanted to try whitewater rafting and quite a few years ago I did it. For me, that was a accomplishment considering that I can’t swim. I would like to go again but I think not until I learn to swim.

Who do you want to learn more about in the EVP-COO Area? Send a note to jerilyn@virginia.edu to nominate someone for next month's Employee Profile.

BOV Approves Strategic Investment Fund Awards, Including Support for Research Administration

The Board of Visitors approved the first 13 awards from the Strategic Investment Fund at its September meeting, funding initiatives related to the Academic Experience, Research, and Research Support/ Infrastructure. The Board will consider proposals related to Access and Affordability later this semester.

ResearchUVA, a software platform being developed by the Office of Sponsored Programs in collaboration with ITS, Organizational Excellence, and the research community to manage the research administration process is one of the initiatives chosen by the Board of Visitors for the initial round of support. In the first fiscal year of the three-year award, SIF funding will enable ResearchUVA to develop documentation for non-funded agreements and keyword searches across all proposal and award documents, and it will allow purchase of a connective date analytics / visualization platform, among other advancements.

Read more about the first round of SIF awards in UVAToday.

Visit the Board of Visitors website to review complete materials and presentations from the September meeting.

Check out the Ufirst site to stay current with project news. During the summer months, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider Workday Human Capital Management was selected to address the University's human resource needs. Soon after, the University entered into a contract with Sierra-Cedar, Inc. to be our Workday System Integrator (SI). Team Leads for the next phase of the project were announced in August, and more members of the Ufirst project team are being recruited now. Information about the positions is available on the News page of the Ufirst site.

29 Express Service is now FREE with UVA ID

JAUNT is now operating the 29 Express, free for all UVA employees and students. There are two morning departures from Forest Lakes/ Hollymead at approximately 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., and two afternoon departures from the hospital and central/ west Grounds at 4:50 p.m. and 5:35 p.m. The service operates as an express with only a few stops, however the savings from otherwise paying for parking and gas are substantial. Guaranteed rides home provided by Rideshare and occasional parking permits available from UVA Parking & Transportation also make the 29 Express service a viable alternative to driving alone. For more details on departure/arrival times and stops, visit the 29 Express site.

Day of Caring Round-Up
Operations Team Gives Back to the Community

Staff from across our operational units turned out for the annual Day of Caring in large numbers on Wednesday, September 21. Teams from all parts of the portfolio rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to help local organizations in a variety of ways ranging from landscaping, maintenance, and improvement projects to clerical support to interacting with community members of all ages. Thank you to everyone who participated and to their colleagues who covered for them back at their workplaces. Some of our team members were included in this UVAToday story about the Day of Caring.
