Largest Bond Issuance in UVA History

The Office of the Treasurer just completed the largest bond issuance in the University’s history.  As part of a collaborative effort with colleagues across the EVP-COO portfolio, the University issued $355 million of bonds primarily to refinance more expensive debt.  As part of the process, the University’s AAA rating was reaffirmed by the three major credit rating agencies.  The University uses debt to ensure adequate funding for capital projects and other initiatives.  The AAA rating demonstrates a stable financial outlook and is an indicator of the University’s strong fiscal management.

UVA Honored for Stormwater Management:
Vote Online to Help UVA Gain Further Recognition 

The University of Virginia recently received two awards recognizing its stormwater best management practices (BMPs) by the Chesapeake Stormwater Network. The Dell – which includes the pond located on Emmett Street across from the Central Grounds Parking Garage – received first place in the 2017 Best Maintained BMP category and the UVA Hospital’s green roof received third place in the 2017 Best Ultra-Urban BMP category.

“The Dell award exemplifies the level of effort that Facilities Management staff have continued to put forth to keep the Dell in top form, functioning at a high level with respect to water quality and quantity, visually, and as a local amenity,” according to Associate Director for Environmental Resources Jeff Sitler, whose team oversees the University’s environmental compliance requirements. "The Hospital’s green roof is a great example of what stormwater management practices can be implemented even when there doesn’t seem to be any space available," Sitler added.

The Chesapeake Stormwater Network will conduct open voting until Monday, March 13 to select the overall winner from the eight first place finalists in each category. Vote for UVA’s Dell project by visiting the Chesapeake Stormwater Network’s website.

Outstanding Contribution Award Nominations             
 

Here's your opportunity to recognize the excellence of the many dedicated, hardworking staff members across Grounds. Faculty and staff are invited to nominate colleagues for this year's Leonard W. Sandridge Outstanding Contribution Awards. This award is the highest honor for University of Virginia staff. Recipients are publicly recognized and presented with a $1,000 award.

One hour parking validation at the Central Grounds garage is provided. Shuttles to breakfast are available, with return service, from Carruthers, Darden Gatehouse, and Lan Road (McLeod Hall) between 6:50 and 9:15 a.m.

FAN Welcomes President Sullivan to Winter Gathering  
                 

The Foundation Administrators Network (FAN), an initiative led by the Office of the Treasurer to create collaborative opportunities for the University and its foundations, met in February with special guest, President Teresa Sullivan. The President praised the abilities of the foundations to engage volunteers, mobilize support, and collaborate to identify creative solutions for emerging issues. She noted the University’s impact on local and state economies as an example of the importance of these strong University collaborations, highlighting 1 in 76 jobs in the Commonwealth is attributable to UVA.

HR Partnerships Across Grounds  
  

The Ufirst project is dedicated to collaborating with current HR operations across Grounds to ensure a smooth transition to future state; this includes keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly. Over the past several months, the Ufirst project team and HR operations leaders have discussed how to best handle current HR vacancies, keeping sight of our top priority of serving our customers.  This charge led to the creation of the S3 Transition Subcommittee. The subcommittee has created a process for filling critical HR positions and will share ideas on how to best leverage talent throughout the HR community during such a critical time for the organization. Project Management: Principles and Practice

Presenter: Gerald Starsia, PhD, Associate Professor and Executive Director of the Curry School Foundation

Within the context of a case study at UVA, this session is designed to briefly describe the core essentials of project management tools and techniques. We will begin with the Project Plan including chartering, work breakdown and stakeholder analysis; and then will apply these concepts to the case study. The session will conclude with a discussion about newly emerging trends in project management. The goal of this 90 minute session is to expose the attendees to core principles, critical considerations for success, and where to find resources you will need to be successful when called upon to lead a complex project. Management Development Program for UVAFinance Managers

           
Managing people is one of the most important and most challenging roles in any organization. Recognizing the tough role managers have, UVAFinance has begun an intense, year-long course for managers called the Management Development Program (MDP). UVAFinance worked with the Center for Leadership Excellence to develop the structure of the MDP, which includes three facets: 360-degree feedback, a series of development sessions, and individual coaching. Eighteen managers representing almost all of UVAFinance’s departments make up the inaugural class. 
 
In addition to the 360-degree feedback and the skills development sessions, participants in the program have the opportunity to take part in one-on-one leadership coaching. The one-on-one coaching began with sessions with the Center for Leadership Excellence, where participants were able to review the results of their 360-degree feedback, and discuss professional development opportunities. Participants are encouraged to continue their leadership coaching throughout the program with Patty Marbury, who is a certified coach.
 
The long-term goal of the program is that all those in UVAFinance who manage others will participate in the program.  Read more about the Management Development Program here.

Tax Documents and Preparation Assistance

       
W-2s are available online and were mailed on January 31. Your 1095-C, a tax document that provides information about health insurance coverage, should arrive in March by mail to your address on file. If you have not received your 1095-C by the end of March, please contact the HR Service Team at AskHR@virginia.edu or 434.982.0123. Get more information about the 1095-C.

Nominations for the John T. Casteen III Diversity - Equity - Inclusion Leadership Award

The John T. Casteen Diversity-Equity-Inclusion Leadership Award honors a member of the University community who best demonstrates dedication to leadership and the ability to create a setting in which the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion is paramount. Candidates should demonstrate the following:  

  • Commitment and distinct passion for diversity at the University of Virginia and community
  • Leadership role in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia and community
  • Significant and quantifiable impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia and community proportionate to the duration of the nominee’s efforts.
