President’s Message August

What Members Are Doing

Many Guild members are finding ways to self-educate, show, and sell their art despite the restrictions on our typical venues including art-in-the-park, member art shows, and bank lobby hangings.  For example, Sedona Summer has created a Facebook group that is attracting a growing following. The artists in the group, including many Guild members, display their work, share demonstration videos, host small shows at residences and otherwise support each other on-line. Given the pandemic restrictions, this type of outlet allows members and others to remain active. The Facebook group site is called 'Local Artists Helping Each Other.' Another example is Lee Ames who arranged to hang her paintings in the newly opened Seal Pub and Cafe in Harwich Center.  She is achieving success in selling her paintings. Katherine Magnusson has for several years arranged to have artists work's enlarged and displayed at 400 East Restaurant in East Harwich. I applaud their initiatives.

Yes, these are not Guild sponsored venues but the question I ask is "why not?"  Maybe it is time for the Guild to expand our horizons?  It only takes members willing to try something new.and leadership to willing support them.  I am committed to the latter.

Helpful and Inspiring Websites

Members have been asked to submit links to artists' demos in any medium along with a short description of why you found it useful. They are typically available via YouTube, Pinterest, and various social media outlets. Send to Joan Carroll, she can share these in our newsletter.  If we get sufficient submissions we can start a list categorized by artist or medium and post on our website.

"I started joining a free Zoom Feedback Friday presented by a group from Washington state:
https://botanicalcolors.com/. This independently-owned textile company showcases fiber artists each week with conversations geared towards natural dyeing, dyeing techniques, and artistic applications. Really inspiring discussions with artists one may never come into contact with had it not been for COVID-19. I appreciate the live content, even if as an audience member am not asking any questions." "I have been filming waves with my i-phone on beach walks. Later I  create thumbnail plans and select the compositions that are most promising. I do not strictly adhere to the video, but it provides an initial structure."  Joan Carroll

Recent event locations were: Rock Harbor, Red River, and Sesuit Harbor. Weather and parking impact each week’s time, and location. To work around the heatwave, Chris Banks rescheduled the Red River event to 4 PM, avoiding the worst of the intense heat and parking fees. The painters who have taken advantage of  Chris' preplanning have found these events fun and motivational. Check our website, Facebook, or email for upcoming information.
