FacNet's Organizational Growth

This summer FacNet has been hard at work rebuilding our infrastructure and expanding our leadership team. We're excited to announce several new updates: we launched our new 2021 Steering Committee; we finalized FacNet's Mission and Vision statement that incorporates faculty consensus from our Spring Retreat; and we have fleshed out five new committees for general members to utilize for action-oriented projects. Read on below for more details and check out some additional upcoming opportunities!


Meet our New Steering Committee Faculty!
Our Steering Committee is composed of faculty, community engagement staff, and non-profit partners. The group expands across 7 Public Universities, 3 Private Universities, 1 Community College, 3 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, 1 Research Center, and 4 Non-Profits. We come from 13 states including South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Iowa, and California. Join a New Committee

Joining a Committee entails attending a monthly meeting and collaborating on short-term or long-term projects offline. Fill out this form if you'd like to join or attend a meeting and offer ideas! All committee meeting times can be viewed on our FacNet Calendar (which you can import into your own Google Calendar here) and meeting times may be subject to change once the semester starts. 

FacNet has recently onboarded a new Steering Committee and initiated five new action-oriented committees for members to join. They are as follows: 

1. Voter Suppression and Redistricting: Tackle issues of equity and voting rights. 
  • Faculty Steering Committee Leads: Crystal Harris, Jon Winet, Keith Parker, Teri Platt
  • Meeting Time: 4th Friday of each month at 11 AM EDT.*
2. Local Elections: Promote elections at the local and state level in 2021 and beyond. 
  • Faculty Steering Committee Leads: Naneida Lazarte, Byrd Hughes, Mark Sanders, Eliot Parker, Chelsea Kaufman
  • Meeting Time: 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10 AM EDT.* 
3. Curricula and Scholarship: Will compose and gather resources related to student voter engagement and work on initiatives related to promoting civic engagement in the classroom. 
  • Faculty Steering Committee Leads: Sara Gubala, Connie Jorgensen, Nancy Thomas, Bridget Trogden, Soji Akomolafe
  • Meeting Time: TBD.*
4. Tenure and Promotion: Integrate student voter engagement into tenure and promotion review standards.

  • Meeting Time: TBD.*
5. STEM Student Mobilization: Devise action plans for mobilizing STEM students and incorporating student voter engagement in the sciences.

  • Meeting Time: Next meeting July 8th, 1 PM EDT. Recurring time TBD.*

Our New Mission and Vision Statements
After numerous conversations with members and our ideation session from our Spring Retreat, our expanded Steering Committee officially finalized our mission and vision statements. Check them out below!

Mission: The Faculty Network supports and empowers faculty of all disciplines in higher education to contribute to the development of students and faculty as engaged voters and full participants in a democratic society.

Vision: We envision a higher education landscape where colleges and universities actualize their institutional commitments as centers of democratic and voter engagement to foster democracy as a way of life for all members of their campus communities and beyond.

26th Amendment Anniversary
This Thursday, July 1st marks the 50th Anniversary of the 26th Amendment, which which lowered the national voting age to 18 and outlawed age discrimination in voting. We join the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition in celebrating this momentous anniversary! Here's what you can do to celebrate:

Celebrate the summer with CEEP's Splash into Democracy Summer Webinar Series! Join colleagues as we dive into how to help students navigate and better understand the connections between tough issues like free speech, voter suppression and communicating with their representatives.
