2016 checklists

We are starting to receive the completed checklists back from parishes which is great. We have had positive feedback, that it has helped parishes audit what is working well and work out what needs more focus. If you have not completed yours yet please do have a look. There is a copy on the website along with the letter which was sent to all nominated people and incumbents.

Please do remember the timing on getting your completed checklist to us is 31 August 2016. If you did not receive one please get in touch with your details so we can update our database.  If you have any questions please do get in touch.

Updates and networking for nominated safeguarding people

Every few months we hold an event for nominated people. At the last event lots of you came to the last event where Bishop Rachel thanked you for your vital work in safeguarding.

At the next event Becca will be discussing the outcomes from the SCIE audit alongside other updates relevant to safeguarding.

21 July, 7pm - 9.30pm, Cheltenham venue to be confirmed.

The Archers and Domestic abuse

For those who join with Judith and I in being regular Archers listeners, the last few weeks have been traumatic. There is a story-line about domestic abuse between two characters Helen and Rob. It has shown the often subtle nature of controlling and coercive behaviour through to a very dramatic ending. Judith has written a blog about the story for the diocesan website.  For those who have not been listening there is a fifteen minute synopsis which is worth listening to, but be warned it is not easy listening.

On 25 May Jane Monkton- Smith is delivering a public lecture titled  “Are you afraid of someone? Understanding coercive control, stalking & homicide”. It is at the University of Gloucester. Places are free but must be booked in advance at this website.
Restored is an international Christian alliance which seeks to end violence against women. They produce a guide for churches on domestic abuse which is useful reading. We have added it to the resources section of the website.

SCIE and IICSA update

There has been a lot happening in the national and diocesan contexts of safeguarding over the past few months!

The Church of England is involved in the new national inquiry into historic institutional abuse – the IICSA. Already every diocese including all Cathedrals have been asked to submit details of all their safeguarding policies, practices, systems, and developments going back over the years, for scrutiny.

In July this year the current roll out of the national church safeguarding audit process arrives in Gloucester!  Conducted by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), this audit will review every aspect of our safeguarding work and a full review will be publicly published on the Church of England’s website.

For both the IICSA and SCIE process, its really important across the diocese that parishes/benefices keep robust records of employees and volunteers working with vulnerable groups.  For more information have a look at the 2016 diocesan checklist and the back pages which give you some helpful templates on which to store your information locally…… and thank you all for all that you are doing already doing.

Over the past few weeks we have been updating the Safeguarding Pages on the diocesan website. You will see that our pages for vulnerable adult safeguarding resources, and for children and young people safeguarding resources are on separate tab links for ease of access; we have increased our parish resources; added a page and links for survivors and victims of abuse; and updated information about our safeguarding strategy, board plans, and how to raise concerns with us if you are unhappy with the way a particular situation was dealt with.

Please do have a look. If you have any comments or additions you would like to see please do get in touch.

Safer recruitment and DBS

From May 2016 the Diocese of Gloucester is further developing its online DBS checking system working with CCPAS. This Guidance is a step by step guide for Evidence Checkers (Identity Verifiers), nominated people, and clergy.

What is changing?
This development means that parishes will be able to fully complete the online DBS system – including Section Y where the key role and level of disclosure is required.

What is not changing?
The Diocese will still manage all DBS outcomes, and blemished disclosures as it does now, its just that the completion of the form online can be done locally.
