On April 5-8th our team attended the New England District Championship at UNH in Durham, NH along with 63 other teams. All four Manchester teams competed: Team 238, MST/Fusion 6763, Central/C.H.A.O.S 131, and West/The Power Knights 501.
This three day competition was challenging yet fun, we put up a good fight but in the end the luck was not on our side because we ended up ranking 63 out of 64 teams. The other three Manchester teams paired up for the 8th alliance. At the end of this event we finished ranked #61 in New England out of 194 teams, top 30% of the District. We also received an invitation to compete at the FIRST Championship in St. Louis April 26-29th and we have accepted!

During the New England District Championships, our team had an amazing time competing against the best robots in New England. Throughout the qualification matches, our team didn’t do as well as we hoped, and we only won two out of twelve matches. This was due to getting paired against the best teams in each of our matches. Looking back at the scouting data, our robot was running very well, with only a few technical hiccups along the way, such as a loose encoder, a metal chip in the SRX board and a needing a more efficient way to test software. Although we didn’t make it past the qualification matches, we are still proud of how our robot and drive team performed at this competition.

After every competition, our team holds a “post mortem” where we go over what went well and what didn’t at each competition. This time we reviewed a lot of positives even though the event didn’t turn out as we would have hoped. Our drive team performed very well during matches, our new active gear deployment mechanism worked well to speed up our gear delivery at the airship, we built good relationships with many of our fellow teams and maintained positive attitudes. As far as areas of improvement, we need to make time for more driver practice, refining our autonomous modes and scouting data, and improving communication within the team.

Throughout the competition, two of our students had the opportunity to be student ambassadors for FIRST. This meant that those students got to show certain people, such as government officials, around the competition. Some of these officials include Senators, the Commissioner of Education, New Hampshire’s Governor Sununu, and Manchester’s Mayor Gatsas. There were also many superintendents from different school districts there to check out this year’s game. Our students had to be able to explain this year’s game and the mission of FIRST to people with a variety of knowledge of the program. This was an amazing opportunity for our students to be apart of!

This week we received an invitation to compete at the FIRST Championship in St. Louis April 26-29th. This is the first time the team will be competing at Championship since 2011. This is an amazing opportunity for the students to compete with and see 400 fellow FIRST Robotics Competition teams, as well as teams from other FIRST programs, various conference sessions, team activities and technical company booth demonstrations and meet scholarship providers.
