A NEW PARTNERSHIP
It’s week 5 of build season, and boy has this season flown by! We got a lot accomplished this week. The week started off with a presentation to Southside Middle School’s PSG, and from that received Southside Middle School as a new supporter of Team 238!

We plan on helping them with chaperoning their school dance on March 10th and doing more presentations at their school to spread the word of FIRST throughout their school. We also plan on some students mentoring their FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team and mentoring their new FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team! We are so excited to be working with them and spreading the word of FIRST around our community.
SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

Rapid Manufacturing is a new sponsor to the Crusaders in 2017, they were brought on board with help from mentor Sean who currently works in their machining division. Rapid is a company based in Nashua, NH with separate sheet metal, CNC machining, and wire cable divisions based around fast turnarounds on prototype and production parts. Their state of the art machining centers, laser cutters, and presses along with their custom built software such as their Solidworks add on that will give instant pricing on parts allows Rapid to get finished parts to customers with incredible speed.

Rapid has supported the team this year by through the use of various equipment and services in their divisions to help us manufacture parts for the robot. Their sheet metal division is powder coating all of our finished parts for the competition robot using their in house paint facility and powder coating oven. Another example is when we were in a bind getting the base plate for the competition robot cut out. The machining division stepped up and cut it on their waterjet for us the next day.

Thank you Rapid!!!
MENTOR SPOTLIGHT

Kim is the team’s Community lead as well as our Sponsors and Presentation lead. She started out as a student on our team, and came back to mentor several years later. Not only is she a FIRST alumnus and a mentor, but she also works at FIRST.

Before our new team structure, she was the head business mentor. She is an amazing mentor to all the students, not just those dedicated to the business side of the team. She comes into the shop everyday with great enthusiasm, ready to work. Her spirit outshines all others at competitions during all parts of the day. Even when times get stressful, she somehow keeps a good attitude. She demonstrates the meaning of Gracious Professionalism® both in the classroom and in the community. She is truly a role model to everyone on our team.

Thank you Kim!

Technical Division Update
Mechanical

The Mechanical subteam has been hard at work this past week machining and assembling pieces for the upper frame and shooter for our practice and competition robots. We finished assembling the intake and the climber on our practice robot. Also we sent out frame and shooter pieces to be powder coated. We are currently working on assembling the intake and climber for the competition robot.

CAD

The CAD subteam has been working day and night to finish the CAD Model, and it’s almost complete! There is also a lot of 3D printed parts on this years robot so they have been attempting to print every chance they get.

Electrical

This week the Electrical subteam finished the wiring of our practice robot with only a few motors remaining to be wired to our SRX’s. Next week we plan on starting and completing our competition robot. Currently it’s being powder coated Black and Neon yellow, our team colors. Our Practice bot is being coded and tested to see how it performs. We plan on having both robots up and running by week zero.
Operations Division Update

Finance

The Finance subteam came up with estimates for travel costs to attend world championship should we have the privilege of attending.  Given our current projections we are estimating that everyone will have to pay about $300.00 to attend and maybe even less depending on how our upcoming fundraisers turn out.
Community Division Update

Fundraising

We recently held two fundraisers this past week. On February 13th we had a fundraiser at Chipotle and then on February 14th the famous Red Arrow Diner held a fundraiser for the team. Thank you to everyone for their support!

Outreach & Awards

At the beginning of this build season, we reached out to the Manchester School of Technology’s (MST) new team to help them get started in the world of FIRST. Since then, we have gained a great partnership with them! We have been giving them some help with writing software code and we have provided them with some necessary parts that they needed to succeed. We wish them the best of luck at all of their competitions and hope to partner with them again next year!

The Executive Summary of the Entrepreneurship Award is just about finished. We are still editing a few parts of it, but we should be submitting within the next few days. Then we can start working on the rest of the award, which must be done by our first competition.

The FIRST Dean’s List Award celebrates outstanding student leaders who are dedicated to FIRST’s core values of Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition. The mentors are currently hard at work this week putting together 238’s submissions for two students on the team.

Marketing

Team 238 has a history of creating silly buttons that we bring to each of our events that spread our name into the FIRST community, tell some history about our team, and even poke some fun towards our mentors! The team has come up with some pretty funny designs this year so make sure you stop by our pit at one of our events so you can collect them all!
