Why Christians Shouldn't Worry About the Election

As you read this today, we are less than a week away from the close of the vote for President of the United States, although we may not know clearly who the winner is for a few days or weeks afterward. I have heard many people, inside our church and outside our church, who are fearful of the outcome. I’ve heard that this is the most important election in our country’s history. I’ve heard that this election will determine if our country survives or crumbles. I’ve heard if Biden wins, it’ll be the end of the Unites States. And I’ve heard if Trump wins again, it will be the end of the United States. In various ways, I think all of these statements are equally true and false.

How are you doing with the election drama? (That is what much of it is, by the way…spectacle, not substance). I think most of us are ready for it to be done with, but you may be one who loves the process and watching it unfold. I hope as we come to the conclusion of this presidential race that one thing you are not experiencing is fear. For Christians, fear has no place in our hearts as we approach the election for one very important reason:

Our leadership will not change next week.

No, that’s not a Trump endorsement. It’s a statement to remind us that if Joe Biden is elected, Jesus will still be King. If Donald Trump wins again, Jesus will still be King. If Howie Hawkins or Jo Jorgensen win…a miracle will have taken place…and Jesus will still be King. Our country’s leader may be determined next week, but our Leader, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, has been reigning since before time began, and he’s not subject to term limits!

Daniel 2:21 reminds us God, “changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.” No one will be elected on Tuesday unless given that position by God. That obviously doesn’t mean that God endorses their platform or their personal choices. But, it does remind us that God is in control.

So, can I recommend a prayer for us for the next week and beyond? I base it on Daniel 2:21:

“My God, my Lord, my King, and my Savior: Thank you that you are unchangeable, and always in control, consistent like the changing of the seasons. Thank you that you place and remove leaders, and you do so for your purposes. I pray that your purposes will be fulfilled, and your glory displayed, in my life, in the life of our country, and around the world. I ask that you give me wisdom to know how to speak and live with love, discernment, wisdom, and boldness in the middle of our changing culture. In the name of the true King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Church, I love you dearly, and I look forward to serving our world alongside you as this election comes to an end.

Honored to be Your Pastor,
Dustin
