Notice of News Conference
Time: 9:30 – 10 AM

Place: State Capitol, Room 404 on 4th Floor
Participants:
Bill McMaster, State Chairman (Volunteer), Taxpayers United MI Foundation (248) 789-8501
William Gordon, Washtenaw County homeowner (734) 994-3480

Attorney Andrew Paterson (248) 568-9712

The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners is overtaxing Washtenaw County homeowners by $26 million.

Starting in 2013, six of the nine Washtenaw County Commissioners decided to impose a $972,635 annual countywide tax burden for “Economic Development” based on Public Act 88 of 1913, an obscure and dormant State law once intended to promote the sale of County agricultural products, without allowing grassroots taxpayers to vote YES or NO on this permanent new tax.

Not only are taxpayers asking the Court to stop Washtenaw County from collecting three illegal property tax assessments based on the Veterans Relief Act of 1899, the Public Highways and Private Roads Act of 1909, and the Advertising Agriculture Advantage Act of 1913, but also to refund pro-rata the $26 million already collected and spent illegally.

The Commissioners are relying on County Corporation Counsel Curtis Hedger’s opinion that they have the authority to ignore the 1978 Headlee Tax Limitation Amendment that was PERMANENTLY voted into our Michigan Constitution by a statewide majority of Michiganians.

Taxpayers United and three resident taxpayers of Washtenaw County are suing the County of Washtenaw and its Board of Commissioners, Jointly and Severally, with PLAINTIFF'S COMPLAINT FOR DECLARATORY JUDGMENT, INJUNCTIVE RELIEF AND MONETARY DAMAGES in the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Taxpayers United Michigan Foundation was founded in 1976 by Dick Headlee (deceased 2004) and Bill McMaster to successfully win statewide voter approval of the 1978 Headlee Tax Limitation Amendment. It has evolved into a tax deductible 501(c)(3) under the IRS code as a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational foundation helping educate grassroots taxpayers how to defend and control their Constitutional Rights despite exploitation by unethical public officials and units of government.

Bill McMaster is still President of national award winning McMaster Marketing & PR he founded in 1968.
