Sometimes we forget just how revolutionary Christianity was in the first century. Today's reading includes two powerful examples of the early church challenging the status quo.
In Ephesians, Paul picks up a theme from Galatians, insisting that Christ breaks down barriers of class and ethnicity. In Philemon, he implores a friend to welcome his runaway slave "no longer as a slave, but...as a dear brother."
Both ideas had the potential to turn the Roman world upside down.
