Autumn 2015

First off, A MASSIVE SHOUT OUT + THANKS to our fantastic staff, farm crew, board members, volunteers, CSA members, farm stand customers + the community at large for helping to make 2015 our best season yet! We look forward to next season + are already planning new ways to bring a little more “FARM” into your lives.
This year has been an exciting year of growth in our nonprofit work. We won a $10,000 grant from the Seeds of Change in the spring, which enabled us to hire two part time staff to begin to build out our nonprofit vision. Our pilot summer program, Farm Fun Days, sold out + we hosted 80 kids over 8 days in August at the farm. Over 300 students visited the farm on field trips. We helped to plant 5 school + community raised bed gardens. Our weekly volunteers more than doubled this year, logging over 200 hours in the fields. Have no doubt, the future looks very rosy for Norwell Farms. Our staff + board members have already begun planning to  build out our homestead at the farm next season which will become our education center of the farm.

Read on to see some great photos + wrap ups from our two fall events that helped us end the season with a bang.  And be sure to SAVE THE DATE for OUR FIRST-EVER HOLIDAY EVENT on Saturday December 12th.

Numbers Tell the Story of a New Seed Source in Town
142 The number of seed packets lent out from Norwell Seed Lending Library’s Seed Catalog in its second year of lending.
31 The number of library patrons who took home library seeds this planting season.
Winding down its second year of lending seeds, Norwell Seed Lending Library’ grew out of a collaboration between Norwell Farms + the Norwell Public Library. The seed lending library is located at the NPL. The seed collection is growing + patrons are returning seeds at the end of each growing season.  Visit the library to find herb, vegetable + flower seeds, many of them heirloom. As with everything in a library, the seeds are free, just sign them out and if you can, return the best of the best as seeds.

A Note From the Fields

Fall is a busy time on the farm. The warm weather crops have been harvested, and the majority of the fields must be put to bed for the winter and cover cropped. There are plenty of root crops still in the field (carrots, beets, parsnips, radishes, and more). We also tucked some newly planted kale crops into row covers to overwinter. This year we are trying something new, we have plowed up the Greenhouse floor and planted spinach to grow and harvest right through the winter! We also spent the past few weeks harvesting all our winter squash (over 2,000 pounds so far): acorn, delicata, and butternut- as well as plenty of storage onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes.  It is shaping up to be a great winter share!

Although our winter share is SOLD OUT this year, you can still buy our produce until 10/31 at the Braintree Market, 9-1pm and at the monthly Marshfield winter market, which begins November 21st at the Fairgrounds.

Norwell Farms Harvest Festival:
A Wonderful Celebration of Our Season & Our Community

Despite the chill in the air and even the first snowflakes of the season, our 3rd Annual Harvest Festival on Sunday, October 18th was a huge hit. We hosted our first Farm Fun Run: a 1-mile course down Jacobs Lane to Jacobs Pond and back through the farm fields. After the race, there was plenty of fun for everyone in the family --- from yummy local food trucks and great live music, to antique tractors and apple cider press, lawn games, face painting and plenty of farm animals to meet. It was a wonderful family-oriented celebration that helped us mark the winding down of our 2015 farming season and allowed the community to enjoy an afternoon of fun and games on the farm.  Thanks to everyone for making it such a great day and visit our website in the next few weeks to see photos.
A Winter Gathering:
Holiday at the Farm!
This year on Saturday, December 12th 2:00 - 4:30 pm  Norwell Farms is excited to welcome the community to the farm to celebrate the holidays with us!  There will be horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers, hot chocolate + sweet treats, crafts, storytelling + more! We will be selling holiday greens, too. Local artisans will be on hand selling holiday gifts + decorations.  We will decorating a tree on the farm and one to donate as well. We will also be collecting non-perishable goods for the Norwell Food Pantry. Admission is $15 per family.

We would like to thank all of our guests, sponsors + the talented chefs for making Norwell Farms' 2nd SOLD OUT Annual Farm to Fork Experience a magical evening + HUGE SUCCESS! We hosted over 250 guests + featured amazing dishes from 7 Boston & South Shore Chefs. Click here to read a review of the evening + to see tons of great shots from the night. Norwell Farms raised $25,000 through this event.
All funds raised will be used to expand our nonprofit programs at the farm. Events like this enable us to reconnect the Norwell Community and beyond to a local, working farm while enjoying the beauty and open space of historic Jacobs Farm. We are already looking forward to next year!
