Kristen and Barb: Two Kind Ambassadors
Kristen Conrad and Barb Landay are two exceptional and appreciated volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House. After Kristen retired from nursing and Barb retired from office manager at her husband’s pediatric office, both still longed for the human connection they once had in their respective careers. This feeling was fulfilled by volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House.

Barb described volunteering at the House as, “a very special place to volunteer.” Just as Barb and Kristen look forward to volunteering each week, the RMHCNCF staff looks forward to seeing them spread happiness and kindness to guests and families at the House.

Through this experience, Kristen and Barb have gained a friendship in each other. For the past two years, they have served as front-desk “smiley-faced ambassadors,” greeting every guest with a warm welcome. “Monday’s are always wonderful to come in and spend the afternoon with Barb,” said Kristen.

While Kristen and Barb enjoy volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House year-round, volunteering during the holiday season is their favorite. “Christmas is always magical here,” said Kristen. “It’s wonderful to see the donations and all the people that come in during the holidays, but really the spirit of giving is all year-round,” said Barb.

“You become attached to the children and the families,” said Kristen. Similarly, we have become attached to each of these wonderful volunteers. We are so thankful for Kristen’s and Barb’s hard work, dedication, and constant support of the Ronald McDonald House.

Thank you, Furniture Country!
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Furniture Country, the Ronald McDonald House is excited to announce that each bed at the House now has a brand new, beautiful comforter. Each comforter is plush and cozy in order to make each family feel at home in their room. As soon as a family walks into their room, they will be greeted by a new comforter and adorable teddy bears that have been generously donated to the House to be placed on each family’s bed. Our Director of House Operations and Programs, Emily Pridgen, said, “These comforters are a beautiful addition to our House. They brighten up each one of our families’ rooms.”
Gavin’s Home Run Derby: Hitting to Help
Gavin is not your average nine-year-old. Gavin is a caring, passionate, and philanthropic young man who has gone above and beyond for the Ronald McDonald House. One of Gavin’s school assignments this year was to take part in a service activity in an effort to “do what is right because it is the right thing to do.” After researching local organizations, Gavin chose to organize a service drive to benefit the Ronald McDonald House because “the Ronald McDonald House is a very kind organization filled with great people.” The purpose of the assignment was to show students how just one person can make a difference in the lives of others. Gavin proved this to be true by making a difference in the lives of the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

Due to Gavin’s love for baseball and passion to help others, he decided to host a home run derby, Hitting to Help, where all the proceeds from the event went directly back to the Ronald McDonald House. There were no tickets for this event. Instead, in order to participate, everyone needed to donate an item on the Ronald McDonald House Wishlist. With this creative idea, Gavin was able to collect $1300 worth of food and drink items, personal care products, and household supplies for the Ronald McDonald House! In addition, Gavin also collected over six pounds of pop tabs and raised an additional $213 that he donated to the House.

The Ronald McDonald House is beyond grateful for Gavin’s hard work, kindness, and generosity.
Summer Youth Volunteer Program
Our Summer Youth Volunteer Program is an opportunity for middle and high school youth volunteers, ages 10 – 17, to serve families at RMH and obtain service hours. Youth volunteers help with a variety of light cleaning tasks inside and outside our facility, as well as help with special weekly projects such as baking, decorating, or other vol-fun-teering activities. Under the supervision of adult volunteers and staff, youth volunteers will assist RMHCNCF in keeping our House clean, safe and comfortable for our families.

Youth volunteers serve in predetermined shifts for the duration of the summer program. Program dates for Summer 2019 will be June 10th – August 9th, 2019. Shifts are 9am – 12pm or 12pm – 3pm; youth commit to a shift and schedule of either Monday, Wednesday, Friday OR Tuesday and Thursday. This equates to either a commitment of 9 hours or 6 hours per week for approximately 9 weeks.

Youth volunteers and their parents/caregivers are asked to download and submit a completed Youth Volunteer Application to the Director of Volunteer Services at Kkelts@rmhcncf.org. Accepted applicants will be required to participate in a mandatory orientation on Wednesday, June 5th, from 12:00pm-1:00pm.

Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve rolling basis through May 15th, 2019, or until all slots are filled. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Thank you for supporting our house!
At RMH, we believe that when a child is hospitalized, the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed. It is because of friends like you that we can keep families close to each other and the care they need, when they need it most.

To support our House and keep families close, visit our website. We greatly appreciate your contribution to our Home.
With gratitude,

Sherry Houston
