Dear supporters

Tomorrow is Thursday 12th December, the day of the 2019 General Election.

This email contains information regarding voting that may be particularly useful to people you know who are voting for the first time.

It also contains a list of the tactical voting recommendations, and estimates regarding the Stroud result.

Stroud Against The Cuts does not endorse candidates or parties. Like Keep Our NHS Public, of which Keep Gloucestershire's NHS Public is the local branch, we are "not aligned to any party – our loyalty is solely to a public NHS and social care service. Our public services are vital for a healthy, educated, safe and secure population."

But as they say: "Make no mistake - the NHS is in danger in the hands of Boris Johnson and this Conservative Government. Neither the NHS nor our population can afford a further five years" (from Keep Our NHS Public's election statement: "Where we stand: Don’t vote Tory, #VoteNHS").

The Electoral Commission provide impartial information about voting, including:
A tool where you can enter your postcode to find out:
  • where your polling station is, or how to find that information
  • contact details for the electoral services team at your local council
  • who is standing in your area at the UK Parliamentary general election on 12 December 2019
British, Irish, and Commonwealth citizens aged 18 or over who are resident in the UK are eligible to vote in UK parliamentary elections. The Electoral Commission provide information about how these elections work and who is eligible to vote.

Information about what the process of voting is like
  • in person
  • by proxy - proxy voting means that if you aren't able to cast your vote in person, you can have someone you trust cast your vote for you.

If  you have an emergency that means you can't vote in person, you can apply for an emergency proxy.

This must be something that you weren't aware of before the normal proxy vote deadline.

The form for you to complete depends on your reason for needing a proxy vote.

These applications can be made up to 5pm on polling day.

Tactical voting
We are not aligned to any party – our loyalty is solely to a public NHS and social care service. But make no mistake - the NHS is in danger in the hands of Boris Johnson and this Conservative Government.

There are a number of different websites and organisations attempting to reduce the chances of a Conservative majority government. Gloucestershire Live ran an article about these earlier this month for all six constituencies in the county.
Below are links to the sites, where you can explore the methodologies used, and the recommendations for Stroud
  • Tactical.vote - Labour
  • tacticalvote.co.uk - Labour
  • The Guardian - Labour (listing Stroud as one of "17 constituencies where tactical voting could prevent a Tory victory or unseat a Tory incumbent")
  • The Mirror - Labour (listing Stroud as one of 46 places "to secure Labour-held marginal", as part of a wider list of tactical voting locations to "to stop Boris Johnson taking power")
There are two widely-known constituency-based estimates for results:

YouGov's "MRP" - or "Multilevel Regression and Post-Stratification" model - updated last night - suggests a possible result for Stroud of Labour: 48%, Conservative: 44%, Green: 5%, Brexit: 3%. You can read more about YouGov's approach and key findings.

Martin Baxter's Electoral Calculus - at time of writing predicting: Labour: 46.8%, Conservative: 45.5%, Brexit: 3.3%, Green: 3.1%.

The following are oriented toward tactical voting based on EU referendum position, but may also be of interest to our followers:
  • The People's Vote's www.tactical-vote.uk - Labour
  • Unite to Remain - Green, as part of a tactical voting pact between the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, and the the Green Party of England and Wales operating in 60 seats in England and Wales
  • Remain United - Labour. They provide "Predicted Vote Shares" of: Conservative: 45%, Labour: 48%, Brexit: 4%, Green: 3%
  • Best for Britain's getvoting.org - Labour
