And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? --Mark 8:36-37 (NLT)
Hello, my name is not Busy. Call me Available. I had a name change and I’d love to tell you all about it. A year ago, I had no space in my life to go to coffee, make new friends, or be fully present in my everyday moments because I was rushing from one activity to another. I was exhausted and frustrated but I did not dare to admit that I was too busy. After all, everything I was doing was good.
But I was lost and didn’t even know it. I was gaining the whole world while losing the real me.
The scary part about busyness is that we can manage it really well. Devotions are read, prayers are said, deadlines are met, responsibilities are fulfilled, and we can do it all without missing a beat. We can be very productive, but are we fulfilled?
There has to be more to life, I thought.
I’m not exactly sure how, but I started noticing that God was trying to get my attention but I couldn’t pin point what He was saying. He persisted and then I couldn’t deny knowing what He was addressing. The spotlight was shining right on my busyness.
I started letting go of things in hopes of striking a balance. The first things to go were easy. It was like I had been given permission to say good-bye to clutter.
But I held on to other things with a death grip. That’s where the soul work began. The real reasons why I was so busy came to the surface.
Finding identity in doing instead of being.
Trying to impress God.
I wrestled with God. “I worked so hard!” Every time He showed me the impurities of my heart and my wrong motives, I was so embarrassed and shocked that it was all in me, but I received forgiveness and healing with the courage to simply let go. Thankfully, our Heavenly Father was quick to extend His grace to me.
Will you allow Him to extend that same grace to you?
God already knows the real you. He wants to meet you with His grace right where you are, with the packed schedule, the unrelenting demands, and your suffocating soul. He wants to introduce you to the real you, like He did for me.
God wants to bring depth and richness into your life beyond your wildest dreams. He wants to re-awaken those crazy dreams that you once dreamt up with Him and give you the courage to live them out!
My experience has been one of making space to give my soul plenty of room to breathe. I found that instead of finding a balance, God hit the reset button to the rhythm of pace and set it to the one He intended for me from the beginning. I did not feel balanced at all. It was totally new and at times awkward. It took some time to adjust to this new rhythm. But I could sense God making me whole and I’ll take that any day over having a balance of busy in my life. I want no part of busy in me.
I love the words of Dallas Willard quoted by John Ortberg in Soul Keeping:
“You must arrange your days so that you are experiencing deep contentment, joy, and confidence in your everyday life.”
Will you allow the Holy Spirit to guide you so that your everyday life is fulfilling?
Will you make yourself available to experience a new depth of intimacy in your relationship with God and others, and a freedom for becoming the person God created you to be?
Will you dare to stop being so busy? When you do, let’s have coffee together!
