Quilt Talk

Baby, It's Cold Outside
(That's why we love quilts...)
Join us Monday, November 16 for Guild

To see all the photos from the October meeting

The November PJ Party is Back!

This event has become a popular one for the Guild and also a key opportunity to finish up the year's Outreach program. The Christmas stockings that we created last year were a much appreciated hit so we will be sewing up another batch for distribution this Christmas. And we can't forget about our placemats for our seniors. A little gift giving at this time of year makes so many in our community happy.
First thing is supplies:

Not everyone needs to bring a machine but we need some so best to buddy or triple up and cover off the following:'
  • Your sewing machine
  • Extra extension cords,
  • Cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • Table lifts (for good cutting height - coffee tins do a great job)
  • Ironing board and iron
  • Thread in neutrals and/or festive green and red
  • Loads of embellishments such as ribbon, buttons, cording, lace.

if you have leftover Christmas fabric that you are happy to part with then bring it along as well.  If you would like to donate items to help to stuff the stockings then bring them along. We will continue to accept items at the December meeting as well.
Next, and just as important:

Wear your PJs!

You decide if flannels or sexy satin is your style, silly slippers are optional as are housecoats. Curlers and caps may finish off your look if you want to beat out Evelyn, our reigning PJ champion for the last two years running, for prizes. The prize categories are always a surprise so use your imagination and come ready to sew, iron or embellish for charity.

President's Message

Well, it is the beginning of November and there are only 7 more Monday’s until Christmas.  Just to bring you up to date on the calendar.

With November comes cool, rainy and cloudy day’s perfect for quilting.  November is my favourite month to quilt.  I can put a pot of soup on the stove, put a fire on in the wood stove and go quilting for the day.  I will have no interruptions because the field work is all done and everyone is just fixing and preparing for winter.  I love it.

With those thoughts in mind have you got your Christmas projects underway?  I have a few
done and a few more to go.  I always have more projects than I do time.  That is true to every quilter.

This month at the guild we will be featuring our outreach group.  They will have some great projects kitted up and ready for sewing on November 16, 2015.  It is always a fun night and a great way to decrease our stash.  So bring your machine and come for a fun evening of sewing.

Also don’t forget in December we will have our annual Christmas Pot Luck.  The doors will open early and we will be sitting down by seven for a great evening of food and games.

Well enough from me. Back to my Christmas projects.  Have a wonderful month and we will see you on November 16, 2015.

May all your Stitches by Forward.

CQA National Juried Show

Toronto June 15-18, 2016

As well as preparing for our Port Perry Patchers Guild Show in May 2016, the next CQA show will be in Toronto next June; this is a great opportunity to try entering your pieces into a national juried show.

For those who would like to take up this challenge, I’ve done a bit of research on dates and requirements, so that you know that you can enter your quilt into both the Patchers Guild Show and the National Juried Show (NJS).
For NJS:
  • Quilt must be completed after January 1, 2014
  • Quilt must not have been shown in a Canadian national juried show prior to June 2016
  • Written permission is required from designer/publisher/instructor if you used a book or pattern or started the quilt in class or workshop
  • Quilt must be completed (and photo’d) by February 3, 2016
  • Notification of acceptance to quilter on February 26, 2016
  • Accepted pieces are to be shipped to NJS May 25-June 3, 2016
See the CQA website for more details about entries. Also, check out rest of the CQA website for the list of workshops offered from a wide variety of instructors and the volunteer opportunities to get involved with the show.

Community Outreach

Christmas is always a busy time for our Outreach program.
The Scugog Council for the Arts annual Mayor's Gala was held on November 5th. For the second year in a row we donated a quilt for their silent auction and it was happily scooped up by a fan.

The SCA fundraiser is critical to the support and promotion of many arts communities in Port Perry and beyond. The Patchers are a welcome addition to the Council's membership.

Quilt Show Update

Quilts- A Show of Hands

Scugog Community Arena,
Reach Road, Port Perry
Friday May 6th, 2016  10 am - 8 pm
Saturday May 7th, 2016 10 am - 5 pm

The Show Shop is gearing up for member-made items to be included in the member's boutique for our Show next May.

We will be starting with thread catcher bags as they were our top sellers at our last show. We will provide a pattern and the plastic inserts needed and are asking you to find your best fabric from home to sew up a bag for our inventory.

After Christmas we will continue with other items such as new and very cool charging bags, and cosmetic bags.

If you have an idea for a shop item that members could sew then please share. Of course we hope that a few other items such as wallhangings, aprons and baby blankets will find their way to the shop as well but more to follow on all that in the New Year.

Put these dates in your calendar! Set up day is Thursday May 5, 2016. You will be dropping off your quilts on this day. There’s nothing like a deadline!

The show is Friday May 6, 10 am - 8 pm and Saturday May 7, 10 am - 5

Have you made a list of the quilts you want to show? How about the UFO’s you’ve got to finish? Remember those labels and hanging sleeves.

Are there quilts you’d like to sell? Think about how you’d like to price them. The guild commission is 20%. Are you donating hand-made things to the Guild Shop? As you are planning things to make as Christmas gifts, consider making an extra for the Shop. If you’ve got something that can be donated to our Silent Auction, be it a quietly thing or gift basket of sorts, please bring it to a guild night and we’ll take it from there!
