Hello Exodus supporters,
Welcome to EYW Newsletter #4 of 2015. It would have been a while since you last heard from us but as always, it has been as busy as ever. We have been organising events and reorganising programs, and there are a lot of exciting changes. At EYW, we are consistently aiming to find new ways to engage with not only young people, but also with the wider community. We have been blessed with staff, members and volunteers that share the commitment to our cause, and are assisting with the many programs and events. As much as we appreciate the helping hands, our programs and events require resources. Not only are donations over $2 are tax deductible, but donations help us help youth.

UNPLUGGED AT GRANVILLE

Unplugged performers: Mina Soliman, Monica Ghali, Nathan Johnson, Mina Askander, Connor Logan, Marian and Mark Botros, Tina Hanna, PK, Tamar Sidrak, Angel Tairua and family, Gary, Nathan Roytis, Nathan Johnson, Moteth, III Reasons, Columan Major, Mirette Funhouse, Anthony Mikhail, Jemen
On the 29th of July, Exodus Youth Worx held its annual music event ‘Unplugged’. This was a night that celebrated the talent of local young people, giving them an opportunity to express themselves on a platform they feel most at home, the stage. With a mix of acoustic, rap, acapella, and instrumental talents, the crowd was in awe the whole night being taken on a journey that moved the heart and soul. Apart from the individual performances, there were also duet and family debuts which had jaws dropping and hearts melting. We would like to thank everyone who organised the events, as well as our amazing volunteers that gave up their time to help this night run as smoothly as it did. See our Facebook page for more pictures and videos.

GRANT AWARDED FOR CONNECT MEETING

On the 30th of July, Exodus Youth Worx received great news that the Rockdale ClubGRANTS committee has awarded $4,000 to the Exodus Youth Worx Connect Meeting program. This is very exciting news as it provides the opportunity for the program to substantially increase its ability to meet the needs of the attendees. This includes inviting professionals and presenters from various organisations to provide workshops on numerous issues such as mental and physical health, road safety, drug and alcohol abuse, anger and tolerance, and equal rights. Young people consistently struggle with many social issues that they are either uneducated properly about or do not have the proper medium and outlet in order to discuss them, and this is exactly what the Connect meetings cater for. Connect meetings are based on discussions, debating, learning and sharing in a non-confrontation and non-judgemental environment. If you would like more information about the Connect Meeting program or would like to be a guest speaker, please contact Christina. We would like to thank everyone that has been involved with grant writing at EYW - you have helped us gain access to so many resources required for our programs!

BLOOD DONATIONS SAVE LIVES

Exodus Youth Worx has partnered up with the Red Cross to become a member of Red25, which is a program designed to save lives through blood donations. This is a great program that works with schools, organisations and businesses to aim to achieve 25% of Australia’s life saving blood. Once a month, we will be visiting the Sutherland centre to give our batch of blood, and make a day of it by enjoying some lunch together. We really believe in uniting with other organisations who aim to have a strong influence in the community and serve humankind. We would absolutely love to have as many people representing EYW as possible but if you can’t join us on the day, there is a way to join us on this mission. Go to donateblood.com.au/red25, under ‘Donating as a group’, click ‘Join/change your Red25 group’, and you will be able to register under the organisation ‘Exodus Youth Worx’. We are starting a tally to see how many live we save a year! Our next blood donation will be on the 12th of September, so to join us or for more information, please email Christina.

ROLLER DOOR GARAGE SALE - CHILDRENS FAIR

On the 29th of August, Exodus Youth Worx will hold its famous Roller Door Garage Sale at the Rockdale location. This edition of the garage sale will be a special one for children where we will have a wide range of FREE activities and great food. Majority of the food and resources you see on the day have been kindly donated by our members, and every single person you see assisting on the day has volunteered their time and efforts. As you know, we are a non-for-profit organisation and most of our funds are either from our generous donors or from our fundraising events. Please come join us at this garage sale to show your support –every dollar raised goes towards supporting young people to make a change.

BIG STREET FESTIVAL

For the first time, Exodus Youth Worx will be holding a huge street festival. This will hopefully mark the first of an annual event that will bring everyone together in celebration of community and youth. On Saturday the 28th of November from 10am—4pm, Bermill Street will be blocked off and turned into a walkway filled with marquees that will keep the family entertained for hours. There will be a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, live music performances, police and firemen, local sporting and fitness members. There will also be market stalls selling all sort of goodies such as antiques items, pre-loved and new homewares and clothing, delicious food—savoury and sweet. We invite you to come along to this historic event as we embark on a journey to show the wider community who we are and the great work we do with young people.

TTOM TURNS TWO!!!

That Time Of the Month (TTOM) is a very popular and successful program where young people come up to the stage in Granville on every second Wednesday of the month to perform spoken-word poetry. In September, TTOM celebrates in 2nd anniversary, and this is sure to be a big occasion! On the 9th of September, join us at our Granville centre from 6pm to share in the joy and love of expression through the Arts. For more information, call 9597 4330 or email Abanoub.

iWORX - YOUNG PEOPLE TRAINING PROGRAM

One of EYW’s most successful programs running at the moment is the iWorx program. This is where we mentor and teach young people various work skills and ethics that they have never been exposed to. Unfortunately, for a lot of young people who want to enter into the workforce, they are unequipped with the knowledge and skills that will make them successful applicants for jobs in the future. We have found that through the iWorx program, our young people come out more confident and qualified to be more successful in retaining a job. Having a job means more to these young people that having a weekly wage, it provides them with a sense of self-esteem that comes from being independent and self-sufficient. Let us not forget that majority of the young people that walk through our doors have experienced a form of isolation or abuse where they have not been fortunate enough to grow up in a nurturing and fulfilling environment. If you are interested in sponsoring a young person, email Deb.

POPE KYRILLOS VI AND ST HABIB GIRGIS CHURCH

Exodus Rockdale is the location for the Pope Kyrillos VI and St. Habib Girgis mass on Wednesdays at 5am and the Friday night youth meeting at 8pm. The presence of a church on our premises is a blessing as is the honour of setting up the church on Thursdays, which our young people get involved with. Having a church presence is an example of how diverse Exodus Youth Worx is and how important our facilities are in serving all members of the community. If you have any questions concerning the church activities, please feel free to call Fr Yousef on 0404 493 805

STUDENTS ON PLACEMENT AT EXODUS YOUTH WORX

Three practicum students networking with each other.
Exodus Youth Worx has maintained a very good relationship with a number of educational institutes such as St George TAFE and Australian Catholic University, who recommend EYW to their students undertaking a course in youth work, community services or other affiliated course. We are constantly contacted by the university students themselves or their placement supervisor asking if they could do their practicum hours with our organisation. At the moment we have two placement students from the Australian Catholic University, one from St. George TAFE and one from Careers Australia who has come from Melbourne.
It is  great to see that Exodus Youth Worx is really having an impact in the community and is building an excellent reputation for the educational we provide to the youth workers of the future.  Here is what one of the students have to say about their time at EYW:
“I am a Melbourne student completing a 6 week student placement at Exodus Youth Worx. I have been fortunate to experience nearly all sides of the organisation, such as casework, program facilitation, and also the opportunity to support and take care of some of the youth staying at the Exodus shelter. Exodus has proved that it is not just an organisation, it is a family. I have observed all members being treated with such sincere love and care. It has been an amazing opportunity and a real life example of how a youth center should operate.”

NON-MONETARY DONATIONS

We would like to take this chance to thank our donors who organise for materials, resources and food that we need to be dropped off at EYW. Even though monetary funds are important, we are incredibly thankful to have other items donated that help elevate some of our costs. If you would like to help, have a look at the website for a list of items we need for our drop in centres. Also, a lot of our donated items are sold at our garage sales to help us raise funds, which we are receiving a lot of positive feedback about. If you would like to find out more on how you can donate resources or even your time, please feel free to email Christina.

VENDING MACHINE AT EYW

Exodus Youth Worx Rockdale now has a vending machine with snacks and drinks! Steve from Provender Vending set up the vending machine mid-August and it is already a hit with our members. If you come to our centre, grab yourself a snack or even a chilled bottle of our EYW water.
