HEDGE MAINTENANCE ON SUNDAY 16TH MAY 10AM - 12 NOON
SLH CYCLE RIDES STARTING 13TH JUNE 2021
It was great to meet again in April at our special ancient hedge and to have our first group maintenance session for a while. Thank you everyone who came along. We'll usually have a session to work on the hedge on the third Sunday of each month 10am-12 midday and everyone is welcome to join us.
Please do come along on Sunday 16th May. We’ll be clearing the path running alongside the hedge, weeding around the hedge, and picking up litter. Come and join us to take part, or have a chat about what we are doing. Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeves and bring gloves, secateurs, shears and a trowel if you have them, although we will come with some equipment.
We will be following Covid guidelines. We will work in groups of 6, maintain social distances, and ask everyone to bring their own refreshments to have at about 11am.
The hedge is between Priestnall allotments and the recreation field, on the lane that links Trentham Avenue (SK4 3QD) and Mersey Road. All welcome.
ORCHARD MAINTENACE, HEATON CHAPEL, SUNDAY 30TH MAY 10AM - 12 NOON.
The SLH orchard trees have been pruned, the grass around them cut and there's been a lovely display of fruit blossom, with some still in flower. But the nearby bushes are creeping towards our trees! Can you join us to remove them? It will be fun, using 'tree poppers' to lever them out of the ground, roots and all. We can also cut back branches on nearby trees, do a little weeding around the base of our fruit tress and use a 'post popper' to remove the support posts that have now done their job.
Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeves and gloves and bring your refreshments for the tea break. We will have some tools, but if you have your own secateurs, loppers and trowel that will help. Location is here
accessed from either Meadows Rd or Nelstrop Rd, Heaton Chapel. Please see the SLH website
for more information about this project.
Our family friendly bike rides are back, with the first to Abney Hall on Sunday morning, 13th June. The four others planned are: to Reddish Vale, along the Middlewood Way, into Manchester, and our last taking in Media City, Salford Docks and Ordsall Hall. For dates and more details of each trip, and to let us know you're coming, please visit the SLH website here

HEATONS OPEN GARDENS SUNDAY 27TH JUNE 2021 12-5 PM
We were pleased to hear that Heaton's Open Gardens can go ahead this year! Organised by Rotary Stockport-Lamplighters, this is always one of the highlights of the Heatons year.
More details are here
, and while you are on the link, have a look at the fantastic video SLH and the organisers made together of last years' gardens during lockdown.
SLH will be having a stall at the Open Gardens. We will be outside Blue Corn and the Co-op on Heaton Moor Road, showing our raised bed for herbs, and there to talk to anyone about what we get up to. This spring we've already been out nurturing the herbs and planting some new ones to get ready. Many of you have been clipping the chives to add to your cooking. Chives are clearly popular! If supplies look limited, there is also a good amount of chives at out bed outside The Heatons Library.
LITTER PICKING IN THE HEATONS
We have been noticing how many people and groups have been out picking up litter in our area. Heaton Norris Wombles, Love Heaton Chapel, and Heaton Mersey Village Conservation Group Greenspaces are organising regular activity days, and you can find out when and where they are picking litter through their Facebook Groups .
The Great British Spring Clean runs from 28th
June 2021. You might like to make a pledge with The Keep Britain Tidy Campaign and do a litter pick in your own area especially in the alley ways, lanes and back streets that often get ignored.

Pick it, Bag it, Bin it!
THE HEATONS POST COOK BOOK
This great little book has just come out, and SLH were pleased to get TWO of our recipes included! Fridge Curry and Leftover Apple Crumble both use up those bits of food that get left in the cupboard or fridge and can so easily end up in the bin. We want to champion all ways of cutting food waste, which is a major contributor to climate change. Pick up your copy of the recipe book at the newly opened Heatons Post Hub, on Tatton Road South, in one of the little huts near the ramp to the platform. It's open 9.30am-3pm Monday to Friday. It's a good place to pop into for lots of local information.
39 WAYS TO SAVE THE PLANET
We've found these BBC podcasts fascinating. They cover a varied range of topics and are great to dip into as they a just 15 minutes each. Check out here
for some thought-provoking ideas.
The SLH monthly meetings continue to be via ZOOM, on the first Saturday of the month 10.30am-12.00 noon. Please contact us beforehand at firstname.lastname@example.org
if you would like to join in, and we will send you the link. The next meeting will be on 5th June 2021.
MONTHLY MEETINGS IN THE FLESH!
On 3rd July we plan to have our first monthly meeting face to face, as we used to have them before the pandemic. We are delighted that Signpost Stockport for Carers, based at The Heatons Centre, are allowing us to use their large and airy meeting room once again. So if you've been put off by the idea of zoom meetings, and would like to meet properly, put that date in your diary!
Everyone is welcome. Do come and meet us!
