Heatons' Open Gardens 2021 is going ahead!

SLH will have a stall outside Blue Corn and the Co-op on Heaton Moor Road, showing our raised bed for herbs, and to talk to anyone about what we are currently doing and our various projects. So pick up a programme at one of the venues in the poster, and start planning your route!

More details about the event are here, Thank you to the organisers, Rotary Stockport-Lamplighters, for making this a real highlight in the Heaton's year.

HEATONS SUNFLOWER PROJECT

Good luck everyone who is joining in with the Heaton's Sunflower Project.  We hope that your sunflowers are thriving and that the snails, slugs, and other bugs have not caused too much damage. The recent sun will have helped!

Remember to enter the SLH competition. We are wanting to see pictures of the tallest sunflower plant, the biggest sunflower head, and the plant with the most sunflower heads. Take a photo with the tape measure by the side, and send them to our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts or to  growing@slheatons.org.

The closing date is 30th August 2021.

Check out our website for top tips and videos if you need ideas.

Have fun with sunflower growing!

HEDGE MAINTENANCE ON SUNDAY 20TH JUNE 10AM TO 12 NOON

As usual we will be at our special ancient hedge to clear the area on either side, pick litter, and do all we can to help it to thrive.  We'll usually have a session to work on the hedge on the third Sunday of each month 10am-12 noon and everyone is welcome to join us.

Come and join us to take part, or have a chat about what we are doing. Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeves and bring gloves, secateurs, shears and a trowel if you have them, although we will come with some equipment.

We will be following Covid guidelines. We will work in groups of 6, maintain social distances, and ask everyone to bring their own refreshments to have at about 11am.
The hedge is between Priestnall allotments and the recreation field, on the lane that links Trentham Avenue (SK4 3QD) and Mersey Road. All welcome.

SLH CYCLE RIDES 2021

Thank you to everyone who joined in the first SLH cycle ride of the year, on 13th June. It all went well and we had lots of fun! The four other rides planned for this season are:  to Reddish Vale, along the Middlewood Way, into Manchester, and our last taking in Media City, Salford Docks and Ordsall Hall. For dates and more details of each trip, and to let us know you're coming, please visit the SLH website here

LITTER PICKING IN THE HEATONS JUNE 26TH 2021

Well done everyone who have been taking part in litter picks!  The (official) Great British Spring Clean has now finished, but Kick the Plastics in the Heatons would like you to send pictures of any litter picking you do on June 26th, especially in the alley ways, lanes and back streets that often get ignored. Send pictures to kicktheplasticheatons@gmail.com

HEATONS' HEDGEHOG HIGHWAYS RETURN!

Many of you took part in the SLH hedgehog monitoring project a few years ago. Now is your chance to get involved again, and see how local hedgehogs are doing now.

Wild Stockport is a project run by Cheshire Wildlife Trust to bring wildlife back to Stockport by encouraging communities to make more space for nature where they live. The focus for the year will be working with communities, schools, and businesses to bring awareness of, and improve habitats for hedgehogs, pollinating insects, and swifts. They will do this through a number of free community events, talks, workshops and activities. If you are a Stockport resident, business or school then please get in touch to learn more about their work and how you can get involved!

Visit their website - Wild Stockport | Cheshire Wildlife Trust or contact Rachael: rnellist@cheshirewt.org.uk

MONTHLY MEETINGS

The SLH monthly meetings continue to be via ZOOM, on the first Saturday of the month 10.30am-12.00 noon. We had hoped to start meeting in person soon, but following recent Covid guidelines, have decided it will be prudent to delay this change.  The next meeting will be on 3rd July 2021. Please contact us beforehand at info@slheatons.org if you would like to join in, and we will send you the link.

Everyone is welcome. Do come and meet us!
