The Lamp
A Newsletter About Magic, Mystery & Life Together
Vol. 1, No. 2, December 2016          By David Reed-Brown, M.Div.
Seasons Greetings <<First Name>>,

It is no accident that seven of the world’s major religions have more than twenty holidays between November 1 and January 21.  This is a season when people need hope.  As I write, here in the United States it is becoming significantly colder and darker.  While many are busy preparing joyful holiday celebrations, it is a difficult time of year for others.  Perhaps it’s because they are ill; or grieving a loved one who died, or there were opportunities lost.  These  are the ones who really need to know that “Light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.”  So, we have holidays for them most of all.

Here in traditional New England what strikes me are the little lights people put in their dark windows.  They ring true for me.  Why? Because, yes, there is darkness, but we are given Light to overcome it.  How?  Everywhere there is kindness, listening, giving, compassion (suffering with), or the presence of a friend, there is Light.  Every time the stranger is welcomed or the hungry are fed, there is light.  These moments are often very small and can seem almost insignificant compared to the calamities of the world, but they are what makes life bearable and joyful.  They are small but together they illumine the stage of life.

This is why I’m so proud to be both clergy and a magician.  Magic gives people hope – hope that what so often seems impossible is possible.   And, I am very grateful for you, because together we bring hope where it’s needed most.  May we do even more together in the coming year.  No matter how you and yours celebrate, i wish you a thousand blessings of peace for a meaningful holiday season and a delightful New Year.

The Edge

“Come to the edge," he said.
"We can't, we're afraid!" they responded.
"Come to the edge," he said.
"We can't, We will fall!" they responded.
"Come to the edge," he said.
And so they came.
And he pushed them.
And they flew.”

The Misnomer of Misdirection
Photo Credit: Boston Magician Steve Kradolfer

There is great misunderstanding about magicians' use of misdirection in magic shows.  Many people believe it to be an almost sinister tool.  It might go something like this, "Look over there while I do something sneaky over here."  Actually, something much more beautiful is taking place.  In the circles of magicians I work with, we refer to it as "direction."  Why?  Because, it is our job to direct you towards the wonder and awe of life.  That's more positive, yes?A politician using misdirection without your knowledge to cover something selfish or harmful... that's another issue altogether, but we'll leave a discussion of ethics for the future.  Until then, enjoy the wonder of life!
