You say Tomato, I

  say Tomahto!

As you can easily see, it's finally tomato season at market! Heirlooms, cherries, beefstakes, roma's!  We have them all and right in time for canning season. :-) Scrumptious, right off the vine..tomatoes!  It's what we've all been patiently waiting for all these months and there is nothing quite like them!

What will you do with your selection?  Roast them, make salsa's, make quarts of sauce for winter storeage? Freeze a few bagfuls?   I've got it..make  BLT's! Or stuffed and bake some, or perhaps you'll make a lovely Tomato Basil Bisque with your tomatoes.  The choices are endless and the season is quickly moving along, so be certain to stop by the market and get them while you can..can :-)  You'll be pleased when that white stuff begins to drop from the sky that you did.

This week at market we'll have recipe handouts for all that will be purchasing tomatoes, so don't forget to pick yours up!

And yes, Cricket Corner Herbs will have plenty of fresh Garden Salsa on sale again this week, but do get to market early, as you guys cleaned me out last week!

Need to fill your sweet tooth craving?

Typically, in this newsletter I try to cover what's in season, because we are, after all, a farmers market..and  that means the focus is generally on all the veggies that are grown by our fantastic group of farmers, but in addition to what's grown and offered at market each week, I think it's time we noted & give a big shout out for the many savory and sweet vendors you can also find weekly at the Wells Farmers Market! You may find out more on what they offer from our website, www.wellsfarmersmarket.org on the 'vendors' page.  This season the list includes:
  • Chef Cove Bakery
  • When Pigs Fly Artisan Breads
  • Ellie Mays Candies
  • Buddha's Burning Buns
  • Little Cottage Baking Co
  • Itty Bitty Bake Shoppe
  • Bread & Roses Bakery

Market Recipes

This is a very simple, but flavorful bisque.. enjoy!

Tomato Basil Bisque

1/2 c onion, finely chopped
1/4 c flour
4 cups finely chopped & pureed tomatoes
1 tsp each of dill seed, dill weed & oregano
3 cups vegetable stock or chicken stock
1/4 c honey
1 c cream
1/4 c chopped parsley
1/4 cup chopped basil
4 TBLS butter

Saute onions in the butter.  Add flour, tomatoes and spices.  Add vegetable broth and bring to a light boil.  Then simmer for 15 minutes on low heat, stirring often.  Add the honey, cream, parsley and basil.  Heat thoroughly..add sea salt & fresh ground pepper and enjoy!
