Changes in scheduling this spring

As you are all probably aware, we have cancelled or postponed nearly all Iowa State University Extension and Outreach events from late March until at least May 9, and I have been instructed to maintain "social distancing" and work from my home office until further notice. I'm sure you have all noticed changes to your daily life as well.

Please know that while most county extension offices are closed to the public, staff may still be at offices or will be working remotely. Please call or email if you need assistance, as we can usually mail or email resources you may need or refer you to specialists for further assistance. We are here for you, so please let us know how we can help. Stay safe and healthy!

Details for Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) waived the deadline for pesticide applicators to meet recertification requirements. Private pesticide applicators whose certification expired Dec. 31, 2019 and planned to recertify by testing now have until December 31, 2020 to meet that requirement. Private pesticide applicators who plan to recertify by attending a private applicator Continuing Instruction Course (P-CIC) and were unable to attend the 2019-2020 P-CIC will now have until September 30, 2020 to attend the 2019-2020 CIC program. I will be rescheduling my P-CICs for sometime prior to this September 30 date.

Those farmers with certification that were current up to December 31, 2019 will be able to purchase and apply restricted use pesticides for the 2020 growing season. This waiver does not apply to individuals who are receiving their initial pesticide applicator certification. Stay tuned for more information in this evolving situation and don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions.

Governor requests PPE donations for healthcare facilities

The governor and local healthcare facilities have requested farmers and others donate extra PPE to local emergency management offices. The primary focus is on N95 respirator masks or similar masks, but donations of eye protection, latex-free gloves or gowns would also be welcome. Please carefully assess what you will need for this growing season before choosing to make a donation. Consider whether you items that will not get used, like a box of N95 masks that do not fit you properly and wouldn't be used, and make contact with your local emergency management office; contact information is located at this link. We're all in this together!
