Hello,

We're excited to bring you the sixth issue of the Kaiju Newsletter and the very first for 2016! For those of you receiving this newsletter for the first time, it is sent out on the 15th of the month every month or sometimes every other month. You can read previous issues on the website if you missed any.

In this issue we have an update about Mei, our Rescue Spotlight from the last newsletter, news about our next litter expected in March, a 2015 retrospective and resolutions for the new year, plus some photos from a fun snow day with the dogs earlier this week.

It has been pretty quiet since December, but with hopefully another litter on the way we are getting busy again making preparations. We will confirm if Angirasu is pregnant by the February issue. If she is, the long-awaited puppycam will be coming back so you can get your puppy 'fix' any time for 10 full weeks!

Our annual breed specialties are just around the corner and we're really looking forward to it. It is a great two-day event with the UKC Japanese Akita National Specialty on Saturday and the AKIHO Los Angeles Branch Show on Sunday. While we're not entering many dogs this year, we still hope to see lots of others at the show. If you're in the area or can make the drive, please come out to meet us and others involved with the clubs.

Remember, we post photos, interesting articles, and fun tidbits on our Facebook page many times a week, so please follow us!

Best Regards,
Claire Matthews

Rescue Spotlight: Mei

The girl was immediately pulled by A Passion For Paws rescue and funds raised by JACA for her post- surgery care. One of the JACA members named her Megumi, meaning blessing or grace, and she goes by Mei for short. Mei is being fostered by my parents and is doing great.

Mei is an incredibly sweet girl and affectionate girl. She gets along on three legs just fine without any sign that she even knows the leg is gone. She especially loves to run and now that she is mostly healed she has been allowed limited freedom to do so. She gets along and play with other dogs when introduced and supervised appropriately; she seems okay with cats as well. Mei absolutely adores children and goes nuts when she sees them.

Mei is available for adoption through A Passion for Paws and is being fostered in Lomita, California. You can contact her foster home by emailing leannafox@aol.com.

Breeding Plans

Angirasu was bred to King Ghidora last week. We tried to get a red stud for Angi's litter but it just wasn't in the cards for us this time.

Litter C Expected in March

Angirasu was bred to King Ghidora in the first week of January. We will find out if she is pregnant on February 4th and if so how many puppies to expect in Litter C. If she is pregnant, her due date is around March 7th. We had originally intended to have an all red litter, but both red and brindle puppies will be possible from this breeding. Each pup has an independent 50% chance to be either color. There will not be any long coats.

2015 Year in Review

2015 was an insanely busy year for us and the dogs. There just isn't enough room for us to retell it all, but we put together a timeline showing most of the major milestones. All of these events from May onwards can be found on our website. We're looking forward to sharing more with you in 2016.

Kaiju Resolutions

Happy New Year! The Kaiju Krew have all made New Year’s Resolutions. Here are a couple previews - see all of them at full size on our website.

Snow Day

We took Mosura, Mei, and Godzuki up to Big Bear Lake to play in the snow this week. All three girls thought it was fun to eat snow. It was the first time Mei got to interact with other two girls and they did great together.

Upcoming Shows
National Specialty & AKIHO LA Branch Show

Next month is the largest Japanese Akita show weekend in North America with dogs from all over the US in attendance. The first day is the UKC Japanese Akita National Specialty hosted by JACA. The second day is the AKIHO Los Angeles Branch show with a judge flown in from Japan. These shows are important to establish the breed here in the US; your support is greatly appreciated.

The shows are a great opportunity to talk to breeders about upcoming litters and meet the parents and other relatives of your future pup. If you haven't met a JA in person yet, you should do everything in your power to come to the shows and meet some before you get a puppy. You may find that it is not the breed for you, or that you want a puppy from specific parents.
