Hydrangeas Plus Newsletter for March, 2016

Newsletter for March 2016

Dear Hydrangea Enthusiasts,

March Madness has begun around the nursery.  Weather is crazy - sunshine, hail, rain and a wind advisory for March 1st.  We only lost power for 7 hours.  That makes for some fun clean up the rest of the week.  The VanHoose household is gearing up for March 14th - Pi day.  Not as exciting as last year (3-14-15 9:26am and 53 seconds - 3.141592653) but still a reason to eat pizza, pie and everything round!

What’s happening at Hydrangeas Plus®

Hydrangeas are taking off with beautiful growth.  Another mild winter for us here so we're hitting the ground running.  Most of the hydrangeas are waking up and all are ready for their new homes.  Order now, and ship now or later!   I'm short on a few varieties so the earlier you order, the better chances those #1 choices will still be available.

Open dates this month

Our official first retail event of the year is coming up this month.  The annual Spring Break sale will be March 25th & 26th here at the nursery.  Hours will be 10am to 4pm both days.  Come buy those hydrangeas on your plant list even before the local nurseries have them in stock.

At the Spring Break sale on Saturday, March 26th, I have again invited several specialty nurseries to come sell with me.  Joining me are Sebright Gardens and Out in the Garden Nursery.  They will be here from 10am to 3pm on March 26th!
Here is a little information about them.

Sebright Gardens carries several hundreds of varieties of shade-loving plants and other interesting plants for the plant nerd in all of us.  Their specialties are hosta, fern and epimediums but they grow a vast selection of companion plants.  Come see a preview of their 2016 fabulous offering from this gem of a nursery just south of us near Brooks.  Sebright Gardens has acres and acres of beautiful display gardens and is also a mail order nursery.

Out in the Garden Nursery is located just a few towns away from us and offers a fantastic selection of sun and shade perennials.  Carol will bring a variety of these perennials and their companions.  Out in the Garden will open with regular weekly hours near the first of April but come out and a get a sneak peak of the wonderful plants they offer.  Don't forget to visit their beautiful gardens and fuzzy farm animals.

It is that time of year to offer Free Shipping on orders over $200. Time to feed your hydrangeas

March and April is a good time to feed your plants with fertilizer or the amendments to make them more pink or more blue (well, as much as a particular cultivar can be deep pink or deep blue).  If you want a dark blue blooming mophead, be sure to select one with rich colors to begin with.  Those pale blue/pink cultivars will always be lighter in color.

We recommend a balanced, time-released fertilizer that slowly releases the nutrition with heat and/or water.  We sell a good one that we love and use in our display garden!  It is a 10-8-8 and is $6 for a two-pound bag.  One bag will feed 8 full grown hydrangeas, three times through the season.

Want that lush blue blooming hydrangea and your soil just isn't quite right?  Try our Aluminum Sulfate "Blue".  Again it is a two-pound bag and you should be able to get 8 full grown hydrangeas fed in one year.  This may take several applications to get the desired color.  We love this product as it is time released so the risk of aluminum toxicity is greatly reduced.  NOTE - This product is not for use on indoor plants, just outdoor!

Lime for pink and red!  Looking for something to help that blue hydrangea go back to purple or pink?  Try some of our garden lime. This is a 4-pound bag and should give you two or three applications for 8 established hydrangeas.  Remember, garden lime will dissolve quickly in water so if you have lots of precipitation, more applications will be necessary to achieve the desired level of pink!

As always read your labels carefully before application.

We have established a bundled amendment product just for you!  For $28.95 (shipping included) we will ship you any THREE amendments!  We will ship USPS Priority Mail just as soon as we can.  Just let us know what three amendments you'd like (in the ORDERS COMMENT SECTION) for us to include!  Three fertilizer, 2 fertilizer and 1 Blue, 2 Blues and 1 Lime, 3 fertilizers!  Aw, the combinations you can make!
