The year may have closed with considerable disappointment after a failed UNFCCC COP25 in Madrid but hope prevails: the ambitious new Green Deal of the EU, a successful COP21 of the Barcelona Convention, two UfM Ministerial meetings confirmed for 2020 (Blue Economy; Environment and Climate Change) and a majorly successful Mediterranean stakeholder gathering adopting the ‘Rabat Declaration’ tilt the scale somewhat. A heartfelt thanks goes to MIO-ECSDE Member NGO organisations, committed COMPSUD and COMJESD MPs and journalists, partners and colleagues for their optimism, passion and continued support. Season’s Greetings!

Mediterranean Parliamentarians, Officials, Journalists, Scientists and NGOs agree on the ‘Rabat Declaration’

Concerned about the dire scientific predictions on the environment and climate of the region if immediate actions are not taken, more than 180 Mediterranean stakeholders met at the Moroccan Parliament in Rabat from 16 to 18 December 2019 to set the most urgent priorities that need to be met if we are to come anywhere near to achieving Sustainable Development in the region within the next decade.

“We welcome the decisions of the Barcelona Convention COP21 and we hope that these will provide useful tools and inspiration for more ambitious targets for the conservation and sustainable management of our large marine ecosystem, the Mediterranean”, Prof. Michael Scoullos, Chairman of MIO-ECSDE, Naples, 4 December 2019.
