"Sweet Summer of '16" Off to a Successful Start
Celebration Last Sunday Raised Spirits and Funds
What a hot event, and we're not just talking about the weather!  115 CBH partners and other community supporters came together to celebrate leadership, provide for our budget (including a Teen Coordinator for the 2016-2017 year) eat, drink and socialize under the cool shelter of our 18 Redwood Grove trees.

The event itself raised more than $3,300 net toward general budgetary needs, but the Teen Engagement "fund-a-cause" initiative was the star, with 90 event attendees choosing to contribute in a range of $20 - $6,500 to completely fund the $24,000 part-time Teen Coordinator position that has been included in next year's budget.  What an amazing vote of confidence in our teen programming, and the future of Jewish life at Bet Haverim and beyond.

Additionally, a heartfelt thank you was offered to outgoing President Nancy Loeb Williams and Board Members Carrie Shepard and Dana Paskowitz.  Also departing, but not in attendance, were Treasurer Andrew Newman and Secretary Jackie Hausman.  New and continuing board members (click here for list) were welcomed, too, and the "Leading With a Jewish Heart" Leadership Class of 2016 also received completion certificates

Immense gratitude is due to the many people who made the "Sweet Summer of '16" possible with gifts of time, treasure or both.  Please click and take a few moments to read the full lists of volunteers and donors.

To learn more about the "Sweet Summer of '16," or to make a post-event donation either to the event or the Teen Engagement Initiative, please contact Joy Cohan by clicking her name, or phoning 530-383-1814.

Gan Haverim Preschool News
 by Rhoda Rohnstock, Director
Our preschool community is gearing up for International Mud Day, on Wednesday, June 29.  We will celebrate all week with lots of muddy activities. If you happen to be visiting CBH during the week of June 27, please stop by our play yard and check out what we have going on. Perhaps you’ll want to dip your toes into the mud, too!  Click here to learn more about International Mud Day.

Although Gan Haverim is a year-round program, many of our friends are getting ready to move on to the new challenges of Kindergarten.  Although it’s a little sad to say goodbye, we know that they will have wonderful experiences making new friends and meeting new teachers.  We celebrated our time together at our End of Year Party last week.  Each child in our program was introduced and everyone enjoyed fun activities, lots of great food and a closing Music Together circle with teachers Karen Crane (a CBH Partner) and Emily June Wong.

During Teacher Appreciation Week in May, the Gan Haverim parents prepared many special treats for our teachers. Each day, we were spoiled with goodies, gifts and flowers.  The teachers really appreciated the families' thoughtfulness.  It is so special to know that the Gan Haverim children and parents respect and value each and every teacher.

If you would like to learn more about Gan Haverim enrollment options, please contact me at, or 530-758-0842, ext. 105.
THIS SATURDAY June 11 and SUNDAY, June 12, 2016
Shavuot Evening and Sunrise Activities
Celebrating the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people, the Shavuot holiday will be observed at CBH with both Tikkun L'eil and sunrise gatherings to study, pray, sing and meditate, as well as nosh on traditional dairy desserts.  All are welcome, and advance arrangements are not required.

The 2-1/2 hour Saturday evening program will begin in the Social Hall at 7:30 p.m., and will include several 45-minute workshops, singing, guided meditation and yoga, with breaks to enjoy homemade blintzes and cheesecake and socializing. A full schedule can be viewed at this link

The Sunday sunrise Shacharit (morning) service and meditation will begin at 5:30 a.m. at the west levee of the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, which is approximately three miles east of Davis.  The site is accessible from East Chiles Road, one-quarter mile beyond the Yolo Fruit Stand.  Student Rabbi David will lead the group in a short, outdoor service before watching the sunrise.  Time for personal meditation and reflection will follow.  The sunrise observance honors the belief that God revealed the Torah to Moses and the Jewish people at first morning light.

A Taste of Yiddish Study Group
10:30 - 12:00 p.m., Library
Do you have childhood memories of hearing Yiddish?  Are you curious about Yiddish in Jewish culture?  This group of approximately 10 welcomes new members, and fuctions in a "book group" format, sharing copies of stories, songs and jokes in Yiddish, that are then translated and discussed in English.

It is ideal for participants to know the Hebrew alefbet before attending, however, help is available for those needing assistance.  This is NOT a drop-in group; regular attendance on the second and fourth weeks of the month is necessary in order to build skills from one meeting to the next.  Please contact Zipi Mor at 530-792-8917 if you plan to join the group, or if you need additional details.

"From Israel-Palestine to Marriage:  What Judaism, Psychology and Contemplative Insight Teach About Understanding and Healing Relationships," led by Rabbi Seth Castleman
7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Social Hall
Presented by Israel Peace Alternatives, Rabbi Seth will look at the fundamental elements of both interpersonal relations and relationships between tribes, societies and states.  A student and teacher of meditation for more than 20 years, he spent nearly two years in silent meditation retreat, practiced as a Buddhist monk in Burma and has taught mediation classes and retreats for Jews, Christians and Muslims in Israel.  The presentation will be followed by discussion and guided mediation.

Additionally, the program will focus on the parallels and causal relationship between the personal and the collective, drawing comparisons between the healing of a marriage and the issues at hand in Israel-Palestine, post-colonial Africa and current race relations in the U.S.  Rabbi Seth will incorporate first-hand accounts of Palestinians and Israelis during the Second Intifada, survivors and rescue workers at Ground Zero in New York City and women and children in U.S. prisons.

Rabbi Seth has been providing support at CBH during Rabbi Greg's sabbatical, and also is the spiritual leader of Congregation B'nai Harim Grass Valley.  He lives in Davis with his wife, Elizabeth Griswold, a UCC minister, and their daughter, Lilah.
No RSVP is required.  The program is free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact Sarah Pattison by clicking her name, or view the flyer.
