Gan Haverim Preschool News
by Rhoda Rohnstock, Director

If you happened to walk by the Gan Haverim play yard during the last week of June, you would have seen many muddy children!  This messy state of affairs was in celebration of Mud Week, which was inspired at Gan Haverim by International Mud Day on June 29.  Some children began the week by immediately sitting down in the puddles of mud.  Others took awhile to warm up to the muddy action, approaching the goo slowly and carefully. Still more children opted to not go into the mud at all, watching from the sidelines, or riding bicycles past the mud bathers.
Also in June, Gan Haverim welcomed as special guests a litter of seven-week-old Corgi puppies.  The puppies' human mother provided a short lesson on how to care for puppies and how they should be treated.  Afterwards, seven groups of children formed, so that the children in each group could more easily hold and pet one of the puppies.  A great experience for the children and puppies alike!
During July, the children are staying cool with indoor adventures, as well as water-based activities in the play yard.  It is also a time when the children may experience transitions, as some friends depart, new students are welcomed and preparations begin for the upcoming school year.

A few openings remain for Fall enrollment.  You're invited to stop by and share in the Gan Haverim routine to get to know the school better.  Contact Director
Rhoda Rohnstock by clicking her name, or phoning 530-758-0840, x105, with any questions about the program, or to find out more about enrollment options.

A Taste of Yiddish Study Group
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Library
Do you have childhood memories of hearing Yiddish?  Are you curious about Yiddish in Jewish culture?  This group of approximately 10 welcomes new members, and functions in a "book group" format, sharing copies of stories, songs and jokes in Yiddish, that are then translated and discussed in English

It is ideal for participants to know the Hebrew alefbet before attending, however, help is available for those needing assistance.  This is NOT a drop-in group; regular attendance on the second and fourth weeks of the month is necessary in order to build skills from one meeting to the next.  Please contact Zipi Mor at 530-792-8917 if you plan to join the group, or if you need additional details.

Rabbi Greg Recommends:  "A Taste of Hope:  A Play in Three Courses"
8:00 p.m., Warehouse Artist Lofts Courtyard, 1108 R Street, Sacramento
A multi-sensory story of seven women from three generations sharing family recipes while imprisoned in a concentration camp, this play weaves food traditions and fears of war into a simple story of love.  Audience members actually enjoy samples of the recipes, as well as the performance!

This production came to CBH in early 2015, and Rabbi Greg shared the following reflections:  "As
we followed the experiences of a group of women through the cycle of the holidays, everyone in the audience was touched by the tenacity, faith and hope that emboldened these prisoners who had so little, but shared so much with one another.  We loved to taste and partake of the foods created throughout the play, which deepened our personal connection with the story and the characters."

The upcoming dates are a fundraiser for O Allos Anthropos, an organization feeding Syrian refugees in Greece.  For ticket and contact information, please click here to view the flyer.
