Sound Walk September Awards 2019

For the Sound Walk September Awards 2019, over 60 contributions were accepted, connected to over 80 events worldwide. Accepted pieces were sound walks, or walking pieces, created in 2019. A huge variety of formats, approaches and subjects from a wide range of creative disciplines, including arts, heritage and history, health and wellbeing, silence and architecture, social practices, journalism, performance, literature and theatre, ecology, and tourism. Recurring was that many works had a consideration for the planetary ecological and human crisis of today. Eventually, taking into account the online votes submitted by the public, the producers of Sound Walk September came out on not one, but two winners, as well as four honorary mentions.

The two winners were selected based on their explicit contemporary relevance, while seen as daring attempts to build bridges with our oral history, or our contemporary society and the future of soundwalking.

Winners:

Forest Talk Radio (Canada)

Launching a new resource for works by walking artists and artists walkers: walklistencreate.org

In June when The British Library hosted an event on behalf of the Museum of Walking called "Exploring with Sound Walks" we realised that Sound Walks were growing rapidly in popularity, and we needed to start planning how best to host Sound Walk September and all the other walking pieces that artists / creatives around the globe were making. Linking up with Babak Fakhamzadeh, an award winning app developer and photographer, who offered to help us create a broader web platform, and with Geert Vermeire convenor of Made of Walking, we have created Walk Listen Create.

The website has all the functions that the Museum of Walking previously offered for creatives making sound walks, but goes far further, incorporating facilities for any walking artist or artist walker to submit existing or new work.  Walk Listen Create also incorporates Iamthewalker, the blog aggregator built by Babak a couple of years ago, so that you can read blogs from walking bloggers immediately they publish a post.  The site also publishes curated news from the walking / art sectors, and is an event publishing platform as well.  We at the Museum of Walking are delighted to be involved in such an exciting project, and know that Sound Walk September will grow in 2020 and beyond.

So what are you waiting for - book mark walklistencreate.org and get submitting your walking pieces, events and blogs.
