Tools for Success Through Adversity

Would it surprise you if you knew many of the tools to succeed through adversity are already in your toolbox? I am talking about things like
  • Work ethic
  • Lifelong learning
  • Sense of humor
  • Mental flexibility
  • Optimism
  • Perspective
  • Listening
  • Seeking opportunity
  • Refusing to quit
  • Sense of purpose
  • Self-confidence
While we all may have these tools, that doesn't mean we are equally good at using all of them. That is why it can be so helpful to learn from and be inspired by others. I like this article from Entrepreneur Magazine because these strengths and others are illustrated by stories from individuals who famously overcame adversity and achieved legendary success.

Another great way to succeed when we face adversity is to volunteer and give back to those who are more in need than ourselves. We are always selling shirts to benefit the Donald White/Mandla A. Ndwanya Memorial Fund, which provides clothing, uniforms, shoes, non-perishable goods, and other necessities to students in both Indianapolis, Indiana, and Cape Town, South Africa. It is very important to me and the organizations I am active in to always reach as we climb. By supporting us, you also support students globally.

I have created an online course to help others in construction gain the tools to become successful managers. The course is a collection of lessons learned and templates created throughout my 21 years in managing construction projects. These processes, all of them, are in the course.

Navigating through complexity, I had to create tangible concepts, templates, and spreadsheets to keep all of the subcontractors I was managing together. and not make the same mistake twice. These tools and processes are outlined in this course, and in a 50-page workbook. I attribute these tools to my success in adverse situations, whether complex design, collaborating with multiple teams, or making tough decisions.

People will always see race and gender, but the skepticism gets diluted when you are exceptional and positively affect the bottom line.

Tell Your Story

What you may see as a failure, others may see it as an uplifting experience for them. They can relate. They can push through what they are going through because they see someone else has made it through.

This week I am telling my story, candidly, to inspire, empower, and uplift others to tell their story. It is in the story where you will see your success through adversity.

Sincerely,
Akilah Darden
“We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated. It may even be necessary to encounter the defeat, so that we can know who we are. So that we can see, oh, that happened, and I rose. I did get knocked down flat in front of the whole world, and I rose. I didn't run away -- I rose right where I'd been knocked down. And then that's how you get to know yourself.” --Maya Angelou
