More Solar School Ribbon Cuttings!

In September and October, we celebrated ribbon cuttings for two more of our Solar Schools: one near the coast at Queens Creek Elementary in Swansboro and a second one at the NC School of Science and Math (NCSSM) in Durham

The system at Queens Creek expects to provide enough power for the school’s cafeteria as well as charge students’ laptops. Students will use provided software to analyze data taken from the monitoring system.

NCSSM's event was part of a larger sustainability kick-off event, including a featured speaker, music by NCSSM’s Jazz Ensemble, and ice cream provided by Howling Cow from NC State University.

All schools from Pilot Year Two have now received their solar array, curriculum package and monitoring equipment. More than 3,700 students have been impacted through your donations this year alone!

Solar School Stories

Ribbon Cutting at Meadowview Magnet

Meadowview Magnet Middle School was the first of four schools in Pilot Year one to install a 5 kW solar array with the help of our NC GreenPower Solar Schools grant program.

We talked to Jeff Edwards, Science Institute Director at Meadowview Magnet Middle School, about his experience with the program and the impact it will have on his students.

Jeff: "As the coordinator for Surry County Schools Science Institute, it was my idea to apply for the grant… and we were very anxious to hear about the funding.  The Science Institute hosts programs for elementary students on the campus of Meadowview Magnet Middle, so the array gave us something to add to those visits."
