The Learning Enrichment Foundation | Summer 2020

The Learning Enrichment Foundation is inviting you to join our professional development workshops as part of our online Summer Program. We are bringing a variety of topics to you that will help you gain new skills while learning from professionals.

The Learning Enrichment Foundation provides integrated and holistic community-responsive initiatives that enable individuals and families to become valued contributors to their community’s social and economic development.

In the workshop, Noa will discuss how her art projects on campus helped her build confidence as an international student and newcomer in Canada. We will also have a fun, hands-on activity where we will practice visual self-expression. Looking at our works, we will examine the ability of art to develop confidence and a feeling of belonging.

Please ensure that you have some papers and paints for the workshop!

About Noa Yaari
Noa Yaari, PhD, is an artist and curator. In her artwork and research, she explores how combinations of words and images create new meanings.

During the pandemic, Noa has created an art project for the Centre for Jewish Studies at York University. This project, titled “Artist in Residence,” shows her experience throughout the last several months

DATES: Wednesdays, August 4th 12th & 19, 2020
TIME: 10:00 am to to 11:00 am

Participants will learn basic drawing tools while talking and exploring stress and its manifestations in their lives. We will create a save and fun space to be able to express and release stress through lines and words. Participants will learn, among other basic tools, how to create simple patterns and how to elaborate specific drawings based on them, as long as the creation of a character and how to add a simple dialogue and story to it.

About Paula Solano
Paula was born in Bogotá, Colombia, where she studied Law and Visual Arts. After working as a lawyer for several years she decided to become an illustrator and moved to Canada where she studied Independent Illustration. Since then, and combining it with her role as a mum, she has been working as a full-time illustrator and her work has been published all around the world. She is passionate about the inner world and personal growth and she loves to combine it with art. She has been facilitating workshops for more than 10 years.

She is passionate about life and stories. Everywhere she goes she brings her sketchbook and pencils with her. She paints and writes since she was a child and she is constantly imagining new worlds and characters.

About Julian Carvajal
Julian Carvajal is a colourful Colombo-Canadian Media Artist, Arts Manager, Producer and Arts & Culture Promoter with a bachelor's degree in Social Communication and a degree in Event and Media Production. Julian has over 18 years of experience in managing and delivering arts festivals, coordinating personnel, producing shows, marketing, budgeting, managing staff, and building community and media relations. He is currently the proud recipient of the Bhayana Family Foundation award for extraordinary contributions by frontline staff who are tackling #UNIGNORABLE issues.

Participants are guided through 2 sessions every week for 6 weeks. An audio recording guided by Anna will prompt students to consider various topics and I (Angela) will follow her class up with a guided meditation practice to help students embody the teachings through different techniques. The objective is to get students to open up and disconnect from their emotions, to learn how to use the breath to remain calm in the face of stress, anxiety and how to take some of the learned coping mechanisms and apply them to their daily lives to optimize their mental health and well-being.

About Angela Argentina
Angela is a certified yoga instructor (300RYT) and has been guiding meditation for 6 years and has worked with hundreds of students across the GTA. Her yoga teaching style varies from strong vinyasa with a focus on alignment, breath and flexibility to a gentle, Hatha style more appropriate for beginners. Her meditations are grounding and draw upon a variety of different techniques and modalities are deeply relaxing and allow students to feel safe as they are guided into a meditative state. Regardless of the practice, Angela is able to read the students/class needs and deliver a session that is healing, grounding and well received.

Participants will learn advanced Excel. This workshop will provide them with the necessary level of experience required by most employers. In addition, participants will be able to practice with day-to-day exercises and problems, enhancing their knowledge to a higher understanding of the platform and its benefits.

Daniel Bonilla is a Humber College student pursuing a computer programmer Diploma. He currently works at the North York Harvest Food Bank and also he also is an active board member at For Youth Initiative. He has worked and volunteered at many other different places, but they are all connected by the same objective which is helping and giving back to his community in the best possible way he can.

Four Faces of the Moon follows the animated journey of an Indigenous photographer as she travels through time.  She witnesses moments in her family's history and strengthens her connection to her Métis, Cree and Anishnaabe ancestors. This is a personal story, told in four chapters through the eyes of director and writer Amanda Strong.  The oral and written history of her family reveals the story — we witness the impact and legacy of the railways, the slaughter of the buffalo and colonial land policies. The film contains no English language, relying on sound, image and Indigenous voices to tell the story.

Mr. Hublot 
An obsessive-compulsive disorder suffering man comes across a robot dog that is about to be crushed like a piece of garbage, he saves it and makes it his new pet, but when it grows too big the joy he derives from his new companion begins to wane.
