Groper Week is here!
I love Groper week, it’s my favourite week of the year! And again this year there’s a full week of activities leading up to the big day. Monday – The Golden Groper Torch Relay starts at Sally Bell’s place at 9am sharp! Captain Sue puts the final touches on the selection and we find out what we are doing. Backstroke?!? Again? Tuesday night – third last training official training session before the meet. Theresa speaks politely to anyone not wearing a Claremont cap. Wednesday – The Golden Groper Torch Relay gets as far as Sally Bell’s driveway. The hold up was all those bottles, cans and things that people have been leaving for the raffle.
Wednesday night media blitz – Nat is on Masterchef to discuss last year’s cakes and judge the desserts, Captain Sue on AFL 360 to discuss team selection and Richard Hughes on Ice Road Truckers to discuss Cottesloe Beach in June. Thursday night – second last training session before the meet. Theresa speaks a little more harshly to the few swimmers not daring to wear their Claremont caps. They agree to buy hoodies. Friday morning – last training session before the meet. Theresa finds swimmers hiding from her behind the change rooms. They buy club swimming bags. Friday evening – live streaming of Elena’s call of last year’s Dash for Cash. With subtitles!
And so to Gropers,
Golden Groper reminder
RAFFLE PRIZES NEEDED!
Our legendary raffle hampers need donations. Please bring any spare (yet new) condiments, wine, toiletries, etc., to the pool and put them in the cage in the bag provided… or if it’s more convenient drop them in the box outside Sally’s door at 7A Erica Avenue, Mount Claremont. Ideally we need your donations on or before Tuesday 19 July.
YOUR ROLE ON THE DAY!
If you have entered to swim, or put your hand up to be a non-swimming volunteer, you’ll shortly receive direct communication from Event Coordinator Sally Bell prior to the carnival about your role on the day. Sally will be asking for assistance with some specific and important roles, e.g., managing the catering in the clubrooms on the day, as well as simpler roles that can be done between your swims. Stay tuned and please help out as much as you can.
The post-carnival feast in the clubrooms for the presentation is a highlight of the day. Pizzas have been ordered however we ask each swimmer to bring a plate of sweet treats for dessert – cakes, slices, fruit, etc. So get your thinking caps on and cook up a storm next week. You’ll receive further instructions as to how to deliver your sweet treats to the clubrooms on the day.
And… get excited!!
Nat needs Curry cooks
If you can cook a curry, Nat needs to hear from you for Tuesday night.
I mean anyone can cook a curry, right? So if that's you please email Nat Bran now at email@example.com - she needs four curry cooks to feed us at Happy Hour.
Gold Coast Masters Nationals
Next year's National Champs are on the Gold Coast from 8 to 11 March. If you are thinking of going, please email Captain Sue now, so she can start worrying about the logistics. As Sue writes: Well, it feels like we have only just finished the Nationals (that’s because we have!) but it’s already time to think about whether you are swimming next year. They are taking place earlier than usual – from 8 to 11 March on the Gold Coast.
If you are thinking about attending can you please let me know? It will fall right at the end of the Open Water season and we need to know how many of our swimmers will need to be focussing on sprinting so that our coaches can factor it into the annual plan.
You can also let me know if you will require accommodation and I will look at booking that in the coming months.
Let's have a big turn this week to support our Gropers swimmers. And don't forget your contributions for the raffle on Tuesday night. Plus Friday training is back!
Training times this week are: Tuesday 7pm to 8pm Thursday 7pm to 8pm Friday 9.30am to 10.30am
Please try to get to sessions 15 mins early for land drills and so the coach can run through the program with you before start time. We do land drills to warm up the muscles before we hit the water. If you want some tips, ask someone who is swinging arms or legs, etc.
Obviously no informal session this Saturday. Why, you wonder? Did I mention Gropers?
And also the informal Barnacles session at Claremont Pool, the one near the Showgrounds: Sunday 3.30pm start
Claremont Masters Awards Night
